Today we’d like to introduce you to MELINDA Goff.
MELINDA, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The story of Paws for Reflection Ranch is rooted in a profound vision of nature-based healing that dates back to 2004. The foundational concept for the organization originated with Melode Seremet, who experienced a “God-inspired dream” detailing a therapy ranch where horses and other animals would partner with licensed counselors and therapists to foster peace, hope, and healing away from standard clinical settings. Upon waking, she sketched out the property design she had seen and recorded the name “Paws for Reflection Ranch”. Following a dedicated three-year search, Melode and her husband, Stan, discovered a 15-acre property on Montgomery Road in Midlothian, Texas, in 2007 that remarkably matched her original dream sketch exactly, allowing the ranch to officially come to life.
In its earliest days, the ranch focused its efforts primarily on establishing a Therapeutic Horseback Riding program alongside educational field trips and small-animal counseling sessions. As the clear therapeutic impact of the animals became undeniable, the ranch expanded by bringing on licensed counselors to formally establish Equine and Animal Assisted Counseling. This structural shift transformed the riding facility into a multi-faceted counseling center, eventually paving the way for specialized community initiatives such as Red to Green for team counseling, Harmony in the Herd for large-group team building, and Boots of Honor for veterans and first responders.
As the ranch’s programs grew, a parallel journey of faith was unfolding for Melinda Goff, whose entry into the organization would beautifully mirror the “God-inspired” legacy of the founders. After a fulfilling twenty-year career in education, Melinda was working toward a MBA and seeking an entry-level position in the field. What seemed like a simple coincidence brought her to the ranch, but she quickly realized that a larger plan was at work. Transitioning to the non-profit sector meant accepting a significant pay decrease, causing her to worry deeply about whether her family’s finances could survive the change. Choosing to take her own leap of faith, she ended her teaching career to join the ranch family. In a powerful confirmation of her choice, just one hour after making that definitive decision, her husband was offered a promotion that perfectly covered the gap in their income, proving to her that stepping out in pure faith was exactly where she was meant to be.
Today, as Executive Director, Melinda leads the ranch as it continues to grow as a vital community pillar, serving over 2,000 individuals annually. Moving away from traditional “talk therapy,” the ranch utilizes a nature-based approach across its 15-acre grounds, conducting sessions in unique settings like the Critter Cabin, under a covered porch, or along its tranquil Nature Trail. The therapeutic roster has expanded significantly to feature over 30 trained animal partners, including horses, goats, rabbits, chinchillas, hedgehogs and a ferret, allowing licensed therapists and equine specialists to perfectly match each client with a “kindred animal” tailored to their personal clinical goals. Melinda works to ensure that Melode Seremet’s legacy remains vibrant and expanding, preserving the founding vision while providing life-changing transformations, hope, and strength to families across the region.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey of Paws for Reflection Ranch has been anything but smooth, marked by the constant challenge of keeping specialized care affordable for families facing financial hardships and the operational weight of managing a 15-acre facility. Yet, the road to the ranch’s current success is also deeply intertwined with the personal struggles of its Executive Director, Melinda Goff. For Melinda, the mission of the ranch is not just a professional calling; it is a direct reflection of a life shaped by profound personal trauma, sacrifice, and resilience.
Melinda’s deep empathy for the military and veteran community runs in her blood, having been raised by a father who sacrificed years of family life to serve four military tours overseas. This foundational background gave her an early understanding of the invisible weight carried by military families, a perspective that would later fuel her passion for the ranch’s specialized programs. However, her true understanding of deep, psychological trauma came from her own survival story. In 2003, Melinda survived a horrific, head-on collision caused by a drunk driver. The violent wreck left her battling severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), giving her personal, first-hand insight into the debilitating mental barriers and emotional triggers that many of the ranch’s clients fight every day.
The physical and emotional toll of the accident was compounded by unimaginable family heartbreak. Melinda’s sixteen-day-old infant son was in the car with her; miraculously, he survived and eventually carried on his family’s proud military legacy by serving in the United States Air Force. Yet, the aftermath of the crash continued to echo through her family. The severe physical injuries and emergency surgeries Melinda endured following the wreck directly affected her next pregnancy, and her second child was subsequently born with brain trauma. Through immense resilience, her second son has since overcome many struggles stemming from that trauma, ultimately earning the prestigious and proud title of Eagle Scout.
These staggering personal battles completely redefine the “leap of faith” Melinda took when she chose to end her secure, twenty-year career in education to step into non-profit leadership. Melinda did not just learn about trauma from a textbook; she lived it. When she walks the ranch grounds today, overseeing programs, she does so as a fellow survivor who knows exactly what it takes to find hope, strength, and healing when the path forward seems entirely broken.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professionally, my work is centered on non-profit leadership, community advocacy, and specialized financial administration. I specialize in guiding organizations through strategic growth, navigating the complex financial realities of the non-profit sector, and managing the logistical demands of heavy, community-facing operations. I am best known for my ability to combine strict administrative and analytical oversight with a deep, intuitive heart for counseling and advocacy, bringing structural stability to spaces dedicated to human healing.
While I am deeply invested in my professional mission, what I am most proud of in this life is my family. My foundation is built on my husband, a courageous cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at just 14 years old. He is truly the strongest, most resilient man I know. He selflessly stepped in to be a father to our two boys when they were very young, and through his example, he has shown them how to grow into truly amazing young men. My children are my absolute reason for being; they are the motivation that keeps me here, fighting through every single struggle I face.
What sets me apart from others in my field is that my heart for those in need is forged in the fires of personal experience, entirely anchored by my faith and trust in the Lord. I know without a doubt that I am placed on this earth to serve others, and I draw from my own journey as a fellow survivor and a military daughter to meet people exactly where they are. My life is a testament to the fact that healing and triumph are possible, and I gladly bring that spirit of gratitude into my community, whether I am building up a service organization or sharing my gift of music by playing the flute in my church orchestra.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, my personality and interests were heavily defined by an active lifestyle, a love for leadership, and a deep-rooted calling to serve others. I was an energetic child who thrived on staying busy, a trait fostered by the unique and wonderful experience of growing up on a ten-acre farm. Surrounded by space and nature, I learned the value of hard work and responsibility while tending to our cows, and I even had a pet bull named Adam. I constantly immersed myself in hands-on hobbies and outdoor pursuits, finding immense joy and freedom in the thrill of both snow and water skiing, as well as spending countless hours on the field playing softball. These early activities instilled in me a strong sense of teamwork, physical grit, and a lifelong appreciation for a vibrant, fast-paced life.
This active energy naturally translated into a passion for structure and leadership as I grew older. Raised as a military daughter, I developed an early, profound appreciation for adaptability and resilience. This upbringing gave me a unique perspective on dedication and duty, which shone brightly during my time in high school. I became deeply involved in the high school band, a commitment that ultimately culminated in the proud and demanding role of drum major, where I learned firsthand how to guide, motivate, and lead a large group toward a common goal.
