Life & Work with Michelle Matthews of Little Elm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Matthews.

Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I inherited strength from the women in my family who came before me.

I put myself through college while working in the financial industry, earning my Associate’s degree from Brookhaven and my Bachelor’s from the University of North Texas. Those years in finance were foundational; they taught me precision, discipline, and the value of hard work. However, in 2007, I discovered a professional home I didn’t know I was looking for. When I transitioned into the IT sector as a Quality Assurance Analyst, it felt less like a career change and more like a calling. I found that the meticulous nature of QA—the pursuit of excellence, the anticipation of problems, and the drive to ensure a seamless final product—was exactly where I was meant to be.

That passion for precision fueled my journey from an Analyst to a Supervisor, and eventually to my current role as a Senior QA Manager.

But if you ask me what truly defines my perspective today, it isn’t just my professional trajectory. In December 2017, I faced my greatest challenge when I was diagnosed with cancer. Navigating that experience taught me more about resilience than any professional endeavor ever could. By the grace of God and with the unwavering support of my family, I came out of that trial not just healed, but stronger. Having been in remission for eight years now, I bring that same grit, focus, and appreciation for life into everything I do—whether I’m leading my team at work or navigating the complexities of everyday life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, the road has rarely been a smooth one. I’ve learned that the paths worth traveling are often the ones that challenge us the most. In 2022, I faced a profound loss when my aunt—who was like a second mother to me—passed away from cancer. She was a fierce advocate for diabetes awareness and a constant source of inspiration, so her absence left a void that was difficult to navigate. During that season of grief, I certainly couldn’t have imagined being where I am today in my career. But looking back, I realize that even in those moments of stillness and pain, I was slowly gathering the strength that has brought me to this current chapter.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Senior Quality Assurance Manager for a national health and wellness benefits company. In my role as a leader, I’m surrounded by an incredible group of people and a team that is, quite simply, amazing. There is a common misconception that leadership is solely about what you ‘pour into’ your team, but my experience has been quite the opposite. While I strive to guide and support them, the truth is that I learn from them daily.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep the faith even when there is doubt in your heart. Know that the plan that God has for you is bigger than anything you could ever imagine.
