Today we’d like to introduce you to Raya Shrestha.
Hi Raya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“Well, my journey started with modeling. Like many, I faced my share of challenges breaking into the industry. There were rejections, moments of self-doubt, and the constant pressure to fit a certain mold. But those early struggles taught me resilience and gave me a thick skin.
Over time, I began to see the fashion world from a different perspective. I became fascinated by what happened behind the scenes – the creativity, the collaboration, and the sheer hard work that goes into putting on a show. That’s when I decided to take a leap and start my own fashion show production company called “Runway Rendezvous.”
Now, it’s incredibly fulfilling to create platforms for other talents, from designers to models, and to bring unique visions to life. It’s been a wild ride, but every step has been worth it!”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
“Has it been a smooth road? Definitely not! The fashion industry is competitive, and transitioning from being in front of the camera to behind the scenes had its challenges. One of the biggest struggles was learning the business side of things. Understanding contracts, managing budgets, and building a reliable team took time and effort.
Another challenge was gaining credibility. People knew me as a model, but I had to prove that I had the skills and vision to produce high-quality fashion shows. Overcoming these hurdles required perseverance, a willingness to learn from mistakes, and a strong belief in my capabilities. It’s been tough, but every challenge has made me stronger and more determined.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
“As a model, my work is all about bringing a designer’s vision to life. I collaborate with photographers, stylists, and creative directors to create images and runway shows that tell a story. I specialize in high fashion, commercial, editorial, and I think I’m known for my signature look, skill, strong walk, ability to connect with the camera.
One thing I’m most proud of is to be able to start my own production house for runway and provide many opportunities to new talents. It’s incredibly rewarding to see my work published or to walk in a show that I know will inspire others.
What sets me apart? I think it’s my dedication and work ethic. I always come prepared, I’m open to new ideas, and I’m committed to delivering the best possible results. I’m passionate about what I do, and I think that shows in my work.”
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
“Finding a mentor and networking can be game-changers! My best advice is to be proactive and genuine. Start by identifying people whose work you admire and who have the kind of career you aspire to have. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them – a simple text message expressing your admiration and asking for advice can go a long way.
When it comes to networking, attend industry events, workshops, and conferences. Prepare a short elevator pitch about yourself and your goals, and be ready to engage in conversations. Listen more than you talk, and always follow up with people you connect with.
What’s worked well for me? Building genuine relationships. Don’t just network for the sake of networking; focus on building connections with people you genuinely like and respect. Offer value whenever you can, whether it’s sharing information, making introductions, or simply being a supportive colleague. Remember, networking is a two-way street, and the best connections are built on mutual respect and trust.”
