Meet Adam Rogers of Swanson Reed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Rogers.

Adam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Grandfather worked for General Motors in Arlington, TX and was transferred to Brisbane Australia in the 1970’s. My mother, my uncle, aunt and Grandmother joined him 1 year later and I was born in Australia in 1980. I started Swanson Reed with my business Partner in 2009 and returned to Dallas in 2011 for initial expansion into the U.S.

Today, Swanson Reed employs over 60 people including my uncle’s childhood friend, that he met in Dallas, when he was 6 years old.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not.

Due to my employment situation at the time, I didn’t have a cent to my name. I couldn’t get a credit card and was thinking about collecting unemployment payments to use as seed for the company.

Starting a business didn’t come easily for me. I am sure I have an undiagnosed form of either ADHD or OCD, or most probably both. My wife had had (justifiably!) enough of me in the first few months of me after starting my business due to my irritability, mood swings, long work hours and massive travel commitments

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Swanson Reed story. Tell us more about the business.
We are R&D tax credit consultants.

We help companies claim back tax credits for their research expenditure from the irs.

We have offices in 6 countries:

US
Australia
Canada
UK
Ireland
Singapore

We help U.S companies with their expansion plans into other countries and choose the best country based on the most generous R&D tax credits and least red tape.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Huge!

The Texas economy has been amazing to us!

Our growth has been close to 100% a year, year on year since 2011.

One of my biggest and best clients is a billion-dollar global mining services company. The night I met the global CFO of that company, it was at a prestigious polo club and I mistook her as the hostess. When I found out who she was, I accidently spilt an expensive red wine on her beautiful silk gown. She somehow laughed it off and 12 months later (in 2009 during the peak of the financial crisis) she became my biggest account. I can safely say without that account; Swanson Reed would likely not be here today.
