Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Owens.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alexis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
So, I’ve been braiding hair since I was ten years old. I started taking hair more seriously and accepting clients my sophomore year in college at Grambling State University. After graduating in 2014 with my Bachelor of Science in Business Management, a large majority of my clientele followed me as I transitioned to Dallas.
This past year in April, I became licensed under a master natural hair stylist and loc-tician by the name of Isis Brantley. After attending her institute of ancestral braiding, I focused more on rebranding myself through social media and setting a goal to expand my clientele throughout Dallas. I pride myself on my exquisite customer service skills, as well as my neat and precise braiding practices. Over the past six months, I’ve been fortunate to grow my clientele 3x times my initial starting intake. Going into the new year, I see myself expanding even more and continuing to be a dominate resource for other women both personally and professionally.
Has it been a smooth road?
So after graduating I initially had a plan to obtain my cosmetology license through either Paul Mitchell or Aveda Institute. I was left disappointed when I realized that I didn’t have any more financial aid assistance to further my business. I did months of research searching for other apprenticeship programs in Dallas, which led me to the Isis Institute of Ancestral Braiding.
Another challenge for me has been managing working a full-time job, being a single mother, and running my business. I’ve had to find a balance not only for my son, and my clients, but also myself as well.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Laid by Lexii – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in all things natural hair care and protective styling. I’m known for my natural/full sew-ins, individual braids and twists, Knotless braids, silk presses, sleek ponytails.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the culture of Dallas and the amount of talent that’s presented within the beauty industry. I dislike the lack of collaboration and knowledge sharing among those who are seasoned business owners.
