Meet Alyssa Schuelke of Bowie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Schuelke.

Hi Alyssa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I received my Esthetics license in 2018. I was a single mom and worked a full time job and did full time school for 8 months. I got a job at The Woodhouse Day Spa as their first hire right after graduating. I spent 2 years there before moving to Bowie during Covid. All through covid, I didn’t work. There were no esthetic jobs during that time. I spent the next couple years at different waxing companies, driving 2 hour round trips 5-6 days a week. It was rough. Then I had to find other work after my wax job fired me 2 days after I broke my ankle. I did life insurance for some time, then worked for verizon. In Janurary of 2025, I looked at my life and where I was going and decided it was time to change. I took my tax refund and used it to buy the products I needed and found a space to rent. I thanked God for the opportunity and making it come true. I opened my spa in March of 2025. Ive enjoyed it all so much! Im excited to see where God takes this little shop. I now started making my own homemade sugar scrubs and lotions to help combat some of the skin issues my clients have and its been beautiful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it has not. My first shop i opened in I thought would be great! It took a turn though. I opened in a space that had multiple rooms. One being the owner who was a hairstylist. My room had no lock but I didn’t have anything expensive to steal so I thought it would be ok. I was wrong. I’d come in noticing things not in their same spot, weird colors on things, and before I moved out(and what put me over the edge) I found my facial steamer damaged. So I moved. The other thing thats made the journey hard is needing a second job to keep this one afloat as well as keep the bills at home paid. I was doing Walmart Spark deliveries but they deactivated my account after 8 months saying they couldn’t verify me. It makes no sense but thats ok. I will find something else if thats God’s will.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently offer full body waxing and sugaring for both men and women, relaxing facials and body treatments, as well as tinting and laminations.

I specialize in brazillian waxing. Its second nature. Ive been asked if I remember anyone’s parts before and I just laugh because no, I do not. Ive seen so many that it all blends together at this point.

I love learning new things. I took the time to really focus on each part of the services I provide. Facials, for example. I spend 100s of hours watching other practitioners perform facials so I can give the best facial massages and give the best treatments. For waxing, its the same! I spent many many hours training and then taking more video trainings to get it just right!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important i believe, is to get your ducks in a row first. It’s not so easy just jumping right in without a plan. Its doable, for sure. I just wish I would have got my plan together first.

I didn’t know how to market very well either but eventually learned to just get out there! I now join any vendor opportunities. I join in on the sip and strolls(though i don’t drink so mocktails is what I serve) and I even created my own Bowie Business Roundup where local small businesses with no storefront can join in a room for the locals to visit them!

Pricing:

  • Female brilliant wax $45
  • Male brazillian wax $65
  • European facial $85
  • Tinting $25
