Today we’d like to introduce you to Amey Balman.
Amey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all began with an apple pie… I love, love, love to bake. And I love pie! I was never a big pie person prior to starting to bake my own pies. The pies I would purchase from the store never tasted right. Plus, I am not comfortable with a pie being able to sit out on a shelf for over a week and still be considered safe to eat. Exactly how many preservatives am I consuming? When I had children, I decided to start making our treats at home. I started with an apple pie. Oh my! I couldn’t get enough of it. I shared it with everyone… my family at holiday gatherings and with friends when we had them over at our house. Everyone raved about my delicious apple pie! And it got me thinking, “What other pies could I make?”. And the rest is history.
Hooray for Pie, LLC, is family-owned and operated. Our pies are made from scratch, made when ordered and always served fresh. We truly hope you will enjoy our pies as much as we do! Yum!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been baking for years; I find true joy in it. I love to bake for others. Some people don’t have the desire to bake and some simply don’t have the time. But just about everyone enjoys fresh baked sweets. When I started Hooray for Pie, LLC, I didn’t anticipate such a warm welcome into the community, but my customers have been amazing! I have met some of the nicest, most thoughtful people because of this pie business. It hasn’t been as smooth or as easy as I thought it would, but I have always been a “no pain, no gain” kind of person. I’ve had to learn how to time manage better to balance between my love of baking for customers and the most important job of my life, being a good, attentive mother to my amazing children.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hooray for Pie – what should we know?
I love to bake many things (pies, cakes, cookies, breads, etc…) but I specialize in pies, I played a lot with various methods of making a crust. I tried different brands of butters. Not all butters are created equal. But after some trail and error, I have made the perfect, light, buttery, flakey, crust. The crust can make or break a pie. I created a crust that you would want to eat alone. You don’t even need to have the pie filling; the filling is the cherry on top (so to speak). With so many flavor possibilities, I truly can please everyone! And on top of the deliciousness, I can personalize the top pie crust design/art for each customer. Pie options are endless!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wonderful husband and family have been my biggest supporters. My husband is my number one fan. He is the one who encouraged me to start this business. He is the one who happily agreed to financially support Hooray for Pie, LLC, until it started making enough income to pay for the supplies and ingredients. And he has also taken on extra dad duties, with the kids, so I could spend many long hours making our amazing pies.
My extended family has been amazing, as well. They have been the most honest taste testers. It’s a hard job but someone has to do it! My mom and sister have always been the ones I go to when I come up with a new idea or new art design for my pies. They always give me honest criticism and praise. They have all been invaluable to me!
