Meet Audrey Lackey Schott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Lackey Schott.

Audrey Lackey Schott

Hi Audrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My family and I moved back to Texas from NYC in 2019, shortly before the Pandemic hit. In September of 2020, I had the idea of starting Backyard Music Classes for young children. I strived to provide a safe, disinfected, and germ-free environment for babies and their moms/caretakers to socialize and attain some normalcy through a formidable time. Over the last few years, I have grown close to families and their children while also slowly growing what is now lovingly known as ‘BMC.’ We now have full classes in my garage, with the door open, making music for the entire neighborhood to hear! My ultimate goal is to provide highest quality and enriching music classes for all children.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would be lying if I said it has been completely smooth sailing! Luckily for me, I have encountered only wonderful families that have been patient and always extend grace in bumpy times. Things like weather fluctuation, like intense Texas summer heat and frigid February freezes, have stopped classes from happening in the garage. I have lost my voice and have had to cancel classes. My twins have been sick, and I’ve had to reschedule. Things break, leaks appear…it’s all happened. There’s a lot of trial and error in building a business, but the most important thing is to take it in stride and to make sure you clearly communicate with the families.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I attained my bachelor’s degree in Opera Performance from UT Austin. Upon graduating from UT, I went directly to school for a master’s in music therapy. I utilize aspects of both degrees in my group classes and private instruction of piano, guitar, and voice. My greatest joy is witnessing young children find their own expression through music — some love to sing, some dance…it’s just beautiful! Teaching and making music with kids is such a privilege. I’ve always thrived on performative-based platforms, but the incorporation of education-based activities has increased tenfold the value of what I do. I also love songwriting and performing!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I loved the stage. My family loves to tell the story of how, when I was around the age of five, I would pretend to be two different Vaudeville characters, switching back and forth between the two. They thought it was hilarious. I was also incredibly imaginative, sensitive, and introspective (still am!). I loved art, music, the beach, animals, and sports (still do!).
