Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Strawn.
Betsy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Miami, Fl. My mom is Puerto Rican and my dad is Colombian. I grew up in a 100% Spanish household. I learned English in school and was bilingual at a very young age. In Miami, this was typical; most kids I knew were like me.
As a young adult, I struggled with finding my passion and what I should do as a career. Teaching was calling my name and I decided to become a Spanish Teacher and graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish. I am currently a middle school Spanish and ESL Teacher in Birdville ISD. I teach beginners and native speakers.
My true passion came when I was able to combine my love of teaching with my desire to become an entrepreneur. When I became a mother, I knew I wanted my children to be bilingual and thought it would be easy since it was for me. I soon realized that was not the case. My husband doesn’t speak Spanish and we are not in Miami anymore where Spanish is everywhere.
The reason why I decided to start My Bilingual Tot is that I was shocked at the lack of foreign language opportunities out there for my own children. When my son started kindergarten, there was no Spanish offered at the elementary level and something had to be done, I knew I wasn’t the only parent that wanted their children to be bilingual.
My family is my support system, and I thank them for being where I am today. Being a full time teacher and owning my own business while being a wife and mother of two children is not an easy task but I am the luckiest to have the family that believes in me and supports me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road. Being a business owner has so many ups and downs. There are moments of self doubt. Moments you question what your next step should be. I’d say one of the biggest struggles has been finding a home for my classes. I started at home and then went into my own space, but having a location has so many external factors that were not working for my business. I am now home again and converting our garage into our permanent classroom. I am so excited about this renovation and having a permanent home for My Bilingual Tot!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
At My Bilingual Tot, we know how important it is to be bilingual. We offer group classes, school classes, and private tutoring. We have something for everyone, including adults :). Learning Spanish is fun!! Through music, movement, and play, your children will enjoy learning Spanish. I am most proud of seeing the growth in my students and creating relationships with these amazing families. What sets us apart is our amazing teachers that have a passion for teaching Spanish. All of our teachers are experienced educators. We love to have fun while learning the language.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
A big change coming soon is our new classroom. We continue our growth by offering more classes and being at more schools to offer after school classes. One of my biggest goals is to offer more languages. That is a huge dream of mine, but I have found it challenging to find teachers. We would love to offer Sign Language and Mandarin, to name a few.
