Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Moss.
Brandi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a love for crafts of all kinds. Paper crafts, ceramics, scrapbooking, and of course, jewelry making. From the time I was about 12, I was obsessed with jewelry. I examined pieces to see how they were carefully crafted together, then figure out ways to make my own version of what I’d seen. It was love at first sight.
I’ve been making and selling my work at various craft shows, online, and in local shops. All pieces are handmade by me in my home studio in McKinney Texas. I’m self-taught and deeply passionate about my work. Designing and making jewelry has been a process of evolution for me over the past 20 or so years. There are so many options to explore, so why settle on just one? Quality and attention to detail are of the utmost importance to me, and I want that to translate into the pieces I create.
I offer a wide variety that includes wire wrapping, beaded and hand-hammered pieces. I enjoy a multitude of different styles and techniques which is shown in my work.
My goal is to provide unique, one of a kind creations that will become favorites over the years. I hope my love for gemstones and design translates to each piece created, and each piece is worn with the same passion put into making it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of my biggest challenges were coming up with a brand for my work, along with how to display. I was very indecisive and found it difficult trying to fit the mold. I’ve gone through various displays in an attempt to match the theme of my pieces, but since there was so much variety, it was difficult for me. It’s been a long work in progress, but I think I’ve finally executed my vision.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MelRose Bling – what should we know?
I design and create jewelry. My specialty is one of a kind pieces. It can be a simple beaded bracelet, or a more detailed hand forged wire wrapped piece, but each is unique. I make a conscious effort not to duplicate pieces, with a few small exceptions. This is what I get the most feedback from customers on – how unique my pieces are. I know there are so many more techniques and styles to learn, and my goal is to continue evolving. I pride myself on attention to detail and ensuring my customers are happy with their purchase. They are what make my small business a success.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have been fortunate enough to have some local businesses to carry my jewelry. They not only supported me as an artist but gave me the confidence I needed to get out and do more to grow my business. Nan Lee Jewelry gave me a great opportunity to design for her shop when I started discussions with local businesses. More recently, I’ve had the good fortune meeting Nikki and Lanie at Native McKinney. They have given me wonderful opportunities – from selling to teaching classes in their shop. It’s such a privilege to work with strong female business owners and have them backing me. It’s a joint effort – Without their faith and support in my work, it would be difficult to back me as a maker.
