Meet Brandon Powell of Lean On Him Consulting in Duncanville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Powell.

Brandon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been an entrepreneur for over 14 years. Yet, where I am today is most certainly not how I started. Initially, I would in-take custom t-shirt design orders for local churches who were fundraising. I soon realized I needed to expand my skill set and resources to fulfill the demands my clientele placed upon me. As a result, I went back to school to obtain my professional certification in Graphic Design. It was probably one of the most pivotal moments in my professional career.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over the years, I kept noticing my clients would ask for certain products or services that at the time I did not offer. Looking back on it now, I realized most clients don’t want to engage with 5-7 companies to service their business needs if they can obtain them within one company. Therefore, I developed the implement vs. outsource principle that I now teach in my business workshops. This simply means every company that treats its client base with hospitality and respect will be approached with what seems to be random requests. As a company, I decided to take note of those inquiries. Some of them I developed the skillset, or “implemented”, while others, I “outsourced”. Overall, that journey was a great learning experience.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lean On Him Consulting – what should we know?
I am a small business consultant with Lean On Him Consulting. I am an educator at heart, and I use my background with various skills to contribute to the deliverables requested by my clientele. We provide over 30 different products and services to small business owners needing to establish their business in the market. A typical scenario may be a client reaching out to us because they heard we design and print business cards or logos. Of course, this is true, but it makes up only a small percentage of our operation. So, what by the time we sit down for our first session, we may dedicate 1 hour with the client, but only spend 5 minutes talking about the cards or logo. The other 55 minutes are spent learning about the client. I choose to take this approach, because of a principle I teach, called “Treatment vs. Transaction”. This means I don’t just pounce on a client to render a service upon hearing the first symptom or need for their business. If I went into a doctor’s office, and upon sneezing, they said, “I think we need to write you a prescription for pneumonia”, I would question that doctor’s true interest in helping me.

Overall, because of this approach LOHC using six key elements to service our client’s professional needs.
1.) Graphic Design
2.) Consulting/Development
3.) Business Strategy
4.) Branding Strategy
5.) Print Production
6.) Business Resources

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am the oldest of five children, and because I have never met or seen a photo of my father, it forced me to be a trailblazer for my siblings. Of course, that was a lot of pressure to place on a kid. Thankfully, I learned to reach out to and receive wise counsel from many great male figures in my life. I try to perceive and extract the greatest qualities in every person I meet, especially men who are leaders in their respective fields.

In my early years, I learned public speaking and servant leadership from two great ministers in my life. I am extremely grateful to all of the clients who allowed our company to serve and learn from them as much if not more than they learned from us. And finally, I am thankful to my wife, who allowed me to fumble through the process of figuring out my strengths and focus for my profession.
