Meet Brian Shumway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Shumway.

Hi Brian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I got into photography after getting a BA in Anthropology. I moved to San Francisco to attend an art school to study photography. Then I moved to New York City for quite a few years and finally moved to Dallas during the pandemic. I started out shooting gritty documentary work but then shifted over to doing editorial portraits for magazines and newspapers like Newsweek, People Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and others. From there, I shifted to doing more commercial and corporate work (and more recently video production work), which is what I primarily shoot today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s hasn’t been smooth at all, and running and maintaining a (successful) photography business (or any creative business) is extremely difficult. Like myself, a lot of people who pursue photography have zero business acumen. One of the hardest parts for me was finding a marketable niche that I wanted to shoot. Finding clients who respect your work can been an uphill battle. Although right now, I have a great set of clients who are awesome, and I work with regularly. It can take years or even a decade or more to get to that point, depending on how business savvy your are (or are not, in my case)!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My photography covers a couple of different genres, but I shoot corporate and commercial work for industries as varied as finance, startups, law firm, creatives agencies, and others. I also shoot editorial portraiture, architecture/interiors, and lifestyle photography mixed in with video and drone work.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
