Today we’d like to introduce you to Caution Dance Company
Hi Caution Dance Company , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Caution Dance Company is more than just a dance team. Based in Dallas, Texas, we’re a plus-size dance company that focuses on showcasing and celebrating the incredible talents of plus-size dancers. Dance is such a freeing and creative art form, but let’s be honest, as plus-size dancers, it can sometimes feel isolating. We don’t always look or move like others in the room, and that can feel like a challenge. But something magical happens when you find a space where everyone gets it—where you’re surrounded by other dancers who’ve walked in your shoes, understand your challenges, and share your passion. That’s what we wanted to create. A few of us plus size dancers came together, dreamt big, and Caution Dance Company was born. We set out to build an inclusive, empowering space that we had been searching for ourselves—and now, four years later, it continues to grow into something more and more amazing everyday!
We’ve worked hard to grow individually as artists while creating a community where creativity flows freely in whatever form it takes. Whether it’s a performance, a video shoot, or just a practice session, every moment we share feels meaningful because we see each other pushing boundaries, smashing stereotypes, and supporting one another.
It’s been a wild ride, with its fair share of challenges, but seeing the hard work and dedication of this team inspires us to keep growing, keep dancing, and keep breaking barriers. Caution isn’t just a dance team—it’s a celebration of everything plus-size dancers bring to the art of dance.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
“The road hasn’t been smooth—like anything worth doing, it’s had its challenges. While the recent appreciation for plus-size dancers is incredible, it wasn’t always this way. For years, plus-size dancers were often dismissed or overlooked, no matter how much talent or passion we brought to the table. It’s disheartening to pour your heart into something you love and feel like the world doesn’t see you. That kind of rejection can make it hard to keep pushing forward.
But that’s exactly why we keep going. We want to be living proof for other plus-size dancers—and anyone who feels like they don’t fit the mold—that you can follow your passion. No matter your weight, age, or whatever you think might be holding you back, toss that doubt aside. Life is too short not to do what sets your soul on fire. If you can’t find the space you need, create it. That’s what we did, and it’s been the most rewarding journey.
Social media has been a game-changer for us. It’s given us a platform to amplify our voices, share our art, and connect with a wider audience. The love and support we’ve received online and in person have been beyond anything we could have imagined. Every like, comment, and message reminds us that what we’re doing matters—not just to us, but to the people watching.
We’re so grateful for our loyal followers, the stages we’ve danced on, and the chance to show what’s possible when you believe in yourself and your community. The road may be bumpy, but trust us—it’s worth every step.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Caution Dance Company is made up of a group of women who genuinely support one another, both on and off the stage. It’s about lifting each other up, celebrating our wins, and growing together as artists and individuals.
Our Artistic Director, Ebony Rodriguez, has been instrumental in shaping the work we produce. As a Booker T Washington HS for the visual and performing Arts Alum, She’s always emphasized the importance of being versatile and well-rounded, so we’ve trained in an incredible range of styles: hip hop, modern, jazz, lyrical, West African, and even Bomba, which we recently explored. That foundation has made us stronger dancers and brought a richness to our performances.
But what truly makes Caution special is that it’s not just about getting on stage and performing—although we love that part! What we really cherish is how this space allows us to explore our creativity. We’re all about passion projects. If one of our members has a performance idea that’s been burning a hole in their brain or a dream photo shoot concept they can’t stop thinking about, we rally together as a team to make it happen.
There’s no box we have to fit into, no limits on what we can be. We’re a community that’s constantly evolving, and we’re so excited to see where the art takes us next. Whether it’s dancing, creating, or just supporting one another’s dreams, being part of Caution means you never have to do it alone—and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Our biggest piece of advice? Don’t be afraid to explore your passions. Don’t let fear or doubt stop you from doing what you love. Life is way too short to reach the end and think, ‘I wish I had.’ Yes, the road might be hard—there will be setbacks, and disappointments are part of the journey—but if you truly love it, that passion will keep you going. It’s what makes every challenge worth it.
And here’s the thing: no matter what your hobby or interest is, there’s a community out there for you. If you look hard enough, you’ll find like-minded people who share your passion. And if you don’t see that community yet? Don’t be afraid to create it yourself. That’s exactly how Caution Dance Company came to life, and it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions we’ve ever made.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing community that keep Caution thriving. A huge thank-you to our Artistic Director, Ebony Rodriguez, for her vision and leadership; our Business Manager, Rachael Landers, and Business Coordinator, Alicia Rabb-Cooper, who keep us organized and moving forward; our Dance Captain, Evan Nicole, for leading with strength. Our Community Outreach team, Faith Mitchell and Courtney Smith, for keeping us connected. Our Creative Concept team, Kourtnei Breon Hanson and Skylar Jackson, for helping bring our wildest ideas to life, and to our incredible media team—Its.PossiblePhotography, ErodPhotography, and PittmanVisuals—for capturing the magic and helping us share it with the world.
To anyone out there with a dream: take the leap. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and never stop creating. You’ve got this!
And if your an artist in the DFW area, with a love for dance looking for a space to create, we’re always looking for new passionate talent to join the Caution family!
