Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Clements.
Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing ever since I grew fingers. It’s always been art. Sometimes it’s easier to speak with pictures than to find the words. I took my education to the Art Institute Dallas and thought that this would answer all my artistic questions. The whole experience ended up with a ton of skills added to my resume, but without direction, I quickly got lost in my ambition.
Being an artist is confusing. After getting frustrated with art, I turned to music and meth to scratch that itch and fell flat on my face. Ten years into my addiction, my college portfolio accidentally got seen by a shop owner and offered me an apprenticeship. After being homeless for over a year, I had nothing to lose. I took what I knew about my art and started my journey. After 11 years of sobriety, I have married a world record holding motorcycle racer, mended all my broken relationships and opened Inkling Studios. This journey is definitely surreal.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It seems that life has gut checked me every forward step I try to take, but that just makes me know that I am headed in my own direction. I am thankful for all the problems. They help me find the right answers.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Inkling Studios – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Not everyone can speak the language of art, and that’s okay. I am not that good at math. We all communicate differently though and that’s where being versed in multiple mediums sets me apart. Being in love with so many different styles had its advantages. Everyone wants to be heard and it has been the biggest honor to be a voice for people with something to say artistically.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The ultimate goal for me is to be able to use tattooing to see the world. There are so many amazing artists on this planet that I would love to have discussions with. I just want to see as much as I can and pass on the experiences to the next generation of artists. Anyone brave enough to be an artist is a blessing and I love meeting them.
