Meet Courtney Bates of Courtney’s Groom Room

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Bates.

Courtney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to business ownership began with a lifelong love of animals and a desire to make a difference in their lives. In 2021, I took a leap of faith and started grooming dogs, combining my passion for pet care with my entrepreneurial spirit. What started as a new career quickly grew into Courtney’s Groom Room, a business built on trust, compassion, and personalized care.

As a solo business owner, I have worn many hats, from groomer and scheduler to marketer and customer service representative. Through hard work and dedication, I have built a loyal client base of over 200 families who trust me with their beloved pets. My mom has joined my team as my assistant, so I get to spend more time with her. She is the one I got my strong love for animals from. My business is centered around providing a calm, one-on-one grooming experience, especially for dogs who may feel anxious or overwhelmed in traditional salon settings.

Along the way, I have faced challenges that tested my resilience, but those experiences have strengthened my determination and shaped the way I care for both pets and their owners. Today, I am proud to have a thriving business that allows me to combine my love for animals with meaningful relationships in my community. Every dog that walks through my door is treated like family, and I remain committed to providing exceptional care while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

No, it has not always been a smooth road. Building a business from the ground up comes with many challenges, especially as a solo business owner. In the beginning, I had to learn every aspect of running a business while also developing my skills as a groomer. Managing scheduling, finances, marketing, customer service, and grooming all at the same time was a steep learning curve.

Like many small business owners, I have faced periods of uncertainty, long hours, and the pressure that comes with being fully responsible for the success of the business. Balancing work and family life while continuing to grow my client base has also been challenging. There were times when I questioned whether I could keep up with the demands, but my passion for helping animals and the support of my clients kept me moving forward.

Each challenge has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of building strong relationships with clients. Looking back, the struggles have helped shape both me and my business into what they are today, and I am proud of how far Courtney’s Groom Room has come.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Courtney’s Groom Room?
Courtney’s Groom Room is a one-on-one dog grooming business dedicated to providing a calm, personalized experience for every pet. Unlike high-volume salons, I groom one family of dogs at a time, allowing me to focus on each dog’s individual needs and comfort level. This approach is especially beneficial for senior dogs, puppies, and pets that experience anxiety or stress in traditional grooming environments.

Since opening in 2021, I have built a loyal client base of more than 200 families by focusing on quality, consistency, and genuine care. I believe grooming is about more than just making a dog look good. It is about building trust, creating a positive experience, and helping pets feel their best. Every dog is treated as if they were my own.

What sets Courtney’s Groom Room apart is the personal relationship I build with both pets and their owners. Clients know exactly who will be caring for their dog every visit, and there is never a revolving door of groomers. I take the time to learn each dog’s personality, preferences, and needs, which allows me to provide a safer and more comfortable grooming experience.

I am most proud of the reputation my business has earned within the community. Much of my growth has come from word-of-mouth referrals and loyal clients who trust me with their beloved pets. That trust is something I never take for granted. My goal has always been to create a business known not only for beautiful grooming results but also for kindness, patience, and exceptional care.

I want readers to know that Courtney’s Groom Room is built on a simple philosophy: every dog deserves individualized attention, a stress-free environment, and a groomer who truly cares. That commitment has been the foundation of my brand from day one and continues to guide everything I do.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t think anyone’s journey is completely shaped by luck, but both good and bad circumstances have certainly influenced mine. One of the greatest challenges I faced was losing my first husband, Dustin, in a tragic accident. That experience changed the course of my life and taught me more about resilience, perseverance, and finding the strength to keep moving forward than I ever wanted to learn.

As a business owner, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Building a business from the ground up, balancing family responsibilities, managing the pressures of entrepreneurship, and navigating uncertainty have all required determination and hard work. There have been moments when things felt overwhelming, and success was never guaranteed.

On the other hand, I feel incredibly fortunate to have the support of loyal clients, family, friends, and a community that believed in me and my business. Many of my clients have become more than customers; they’ve become part of my story. Their trust and support helped Courtney’s Groom Room grow into what it is today.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that while luck may open or close certain doors, character is built by how you respond. Some of the hardest experiences of my life ultimately shaped the person and business owner I am today. They taught me to appreciate every opportunity, serve others with compassion, and never take success for granted.
