Today we’d like to introduce you to Cupcake Hindman and Bruce Helsing.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cupcake and Bruce. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started out in Pierre South Dakota with a store front. Cold weather, warm leather!!
We took our product on the road and became a traveling vendor for many years. After Labor Day, every year we came to Texas. (People ride motorcycles all year long) And found another store front in Maypearl, Texas. We have been here in Maypearl for 8 years now. We are a destination for all of north Texas riders and actually all of Texas.
We have made a name for ourselves as “Quality Leather at an Affordable Price in the MetroPlex”.
My husband still travels and takes our product to lots of Motorcycle Rallies around the country. So by him doing that, we are still available to everyone in the country via our web site sales and phone sales and Facebook of course. We are open 6 days a week. 8am til 6pm closed on Mondays! And he still hits all the BIG Rallies and lots of SMALL Rallies. From Sturgis, SD to Daytona Beach, FL to Sioux City, Iowa to Galveston, Texas, and all in between.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a struggle at times. During the Waco Tragedy, people were reluctant to ride and be seen on a bike, fearing some repercussions from the non-biker community.
Otherwise, it has been very good. People ride all the time, we are near some really good riding roads (curves… small towns, small restaurants.) Getting out of the big city and coming to rural Ellis County to ride and enjoy the view is a major plus!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Big B’s Leather story. Tell us more about the business.
Big B’s Leather is actually known worldwide… That sounds wild for a mom and pop store. But by traveling around and doing rallies, We have meet people from all over the world. And we have sold to people in Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Pain, Russia, We specialize in quality leather, from big and tall people to short folks. And our customer service is beyond compare. Our leather is such a good quality, I tell people all the time “This coat/vest/ chap will last you the rest of your life, the only reason you will need another is because you want another color (we sell Black, Brown, Grey, Antique Brown), or a different size” It’s that good of leather. We also sell children’s coats /vests/chaps (Black and or Pink).
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We are getting older and are happy with where we are, and what we are doing. Slowing down with the tent on the road and just staying around Texas more.
