Meet Daniel Arnauld of Street Photography University

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Arnauld.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wanted to meet and teach photographers. Through creating my own meetup, I organized a workshop and was lucky that around ten models and ten photographers showed up that first night at the Margarate Hunt Hill Bridge. Looking back on the success of our club, it might have been lucky that I chose sunset. However, low light level is a challenge for even advanced photographers. We also stay for a while after dark and work with LED lights. I think the group enjoys the chance to work at night while having the safety in numbers, seeing we have expensive gear and going out at night alone might be dangerous.

Over the past year, my club has grown to over a thousand members. We meet several times throughout the week. A big part of my role is to find models and scout locations for the students, as well as preparing lessons. We also have socializers for the gang and leave our cameras behind.

The entire experience has been wonderful to me because I get to use both parts of my education in teaching and cinema. The themed shoots feel like little movies. Coming up with fresh ideas for the gang gives me a chance to stretch my imagination.

Has it been a smooth road?
Because we shoot street photography, we are susceptible to weather. It gets brutally hot in the summer. Also, day length affects us because we have to meet later in the summer and in the winter, it is already dark by the time most of the club gets off work. Canceling for rain is the worst.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Street Photography University – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We host photography workshops for camera enthusiast and people who are transitioning from hobbyist to professional photographers. We specialize in natural light photography. I am like most teachers in that I am proud to see my students become better photographers than I am. Some of them have amazing talent.

What sets our workshops apart is we provide a model for you to practice your portraits, through a loose structure that allows continuous shooting, rather than the rotation system most workshops have. Also, the themed events are great for building your portfolio with dynamic images.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the serendipity of shooting in the public.
