Today we’d like to introduce you to Digital (Digi) Norm.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While attending Prairie View A&M University, Dallas producer Quinston (Q. Smith) Smith introduced me to recording artist Dorrough Music (Six3). We created the Dallas Boogie anthem “Do The Muscle” which received radio play across Texas and the southern region.
As a member of the Prime Time Click brand, I traveled the nation with Dorrough as his “hype-man”. We performed everywhere, from the hole in the wall clubs to BET’s 106th & Park and the BET Awards. I was featured in tons of music videos as the “dancing hype-man”, but I wanted to be known for more than hyping the crowd. I wanted my own identity.
Fast forward to 2016.
After the resignation of DJ Merk (Yung Nation management), Q. Smith and I began to brand the Digital University as a production team by co-producing the hit singles, “Up in the Air” by Lil Ronny MothaF, “Beat Up The Block” by Dorrough Music feat. Boosie BadAzz, and many more. I decided to sign a two years production deal with Dirty Water Music Group because at the time I felt this was the best move for my career. I believed this would put me in a position to brand myself as an individual aside from the production team.
I must say this was the most interesting two years of my music career!
Since my last executive produced project entitled “#MetroLodgeDFW” (available on all digital platforms), I’ve had the privilege to work with many artists such as Lil Ronny MothaF, Stunna4Vegas, Sauce Walka, Pe$o Pe$o, Voochie P, S3nsi Molly, etc. When I’m not traveling, I’m in the studio with my Digital University/BassLord family. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While under contract, I saw what the industry really had to offer “starving” artists. There were ups and downs, highs and lows, good days and bad. Overall, this experience taught me about being structured in this business and if you’re not then someone will structure your career for you (whether you like it or not).
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Digital University – what should we know?
Digital University is now a studio home for a lot of upcoming artists from Dallas-Fort Worth. I myself, work under the name of “Sounds By DigiNorm”. I came up with this name because I am an audio engineer/DJ/producer, all of which plays a major role in the “sound” you hear today. I have played every role in the industry from hype man to label executive and everything in between. This helps me understand every aspect of the business and how to bring value to any situation I’m placed in.
