Meet Elizabeth Rist of Elizabeth Rist Makeup Artistry in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Rist.

Let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Art has always been something I have loved my entire life. I was always drawing or doing some sort of craft project while growing up and my parents were always wonderfully supportive.

I originally started doing guts and gore FX makeup and assisting my best friend on local horror films. I went on to study at Joe Blasco Makeup Academy in Florida and then came home ready to add more skills to the wheelhouse. I started working in bridal and learning how to style hair. I also discovered bodypainting and how much fun it is!

Over a decade after I started in makeup, I love doing it all. I work in film, commercial, bridal, and photo shoots. I am a published artist and also a monthly contributor for an amazing online periodical. I execute beauty makeups, bodypainting, FX makeup, and hair. I love all forms of art and am always up for a challenge. Never knowing what you are going to be called to do is great! One day I might be doing makeup for a fetish fashion show, and the next, I am bodypainting fire-breathers for a performance. It is always a great time and I love the amazing people I meet and get to collaborate with.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think every freelance artist goes through negative times in their career. Sometimes, when I have a little lull in my work schedule my inner-saboteur starts whispering in my ear. I just have to turn around and tell it to buzz right off! Whenever I feel that way, I love to schedule a super fun and creative shoot with one of my favorite photographers and create something amazing. It’s great to remember why you do what you do in the first place!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
One thing I do take pride in with my company is having a large skill set. I have been lucky enough to train with some of the best in their fields.

It has also been wonderful to have so many great experiences to draw from. Being an artist really means being resourceful and letting people know they can depend on you to deliver what they need.

One more thing I also pride myself on are my organization and communication skills. Having a big background in customer service really helped to shape who I am as a business owner and how I deal with my clients. I think it is sad how things like this can be very lacking these days so I really try to go above and beyond for my clients and make that connection. If they are happy, I’m happy too!

What were you like growing up?
A music-loving tomboy would probably be the best way to describe my childhood personality. I was also a competitive swimmer and gymnast for over a decade and I did many other sports as well. I grew up watching horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films and was also an avid reader of horror and true crime. Playing video games was always (and still is) the best too! I was picked on quite a bit because of my different tastes but was never shy because of it. Embracing what makes you different is very important! Xoxo!
