Meet Elizabeth Ryan of Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Ryan.

Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I resisted interior design in school, perhaps simply because I pictured over done window treatments and fussy details. I started towards engineering and business, but design won overall. There is a very large technical portion to interior design, and it turns out it was the perfect fit for my creative, yet analytical brain.

After 10 years in commercial interior design, I left the work place when my third child was born. Before that mini Ryan could sit up I had friends asking for help with their homes and I worked on projects that grew in scale as my kids grew. The most challenging part about this growth was when I wasn’t running my business as a business. My hours were erratic, my billing was inconsistent and I said yes to more than I could reasonably do. Stressful. I reached out to my husband Adam (who did stick with business school) and together we dove into researching what truly made interior design firms work. Game changer. To this day we are constant students of other design professionals, ready to soak in all of the helpful advice and pass along the same knowledge to new designers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The bumpiest part of my design career was the phase before I realized how important a personal style was to a successful product. Comparing my work to the work of other designers was exhausting and frankly didn’t lead to my best work.

Everything turned a corner with a Houston client who basically said, “go for it” and let me design full out. We created a beautiful, colorful home that spoke to her sparkling personality and it was a light bulb moment. We both enjoyed the result because it was more my creativity and her personality.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Elizabeth Ryan Interiors specializes in residential interior design. Our projects vary from furnishings, remodels and new builds.

A huge compliment for me is when someone notices how our portfolio varies among projects, but all have specialized color and pattern combinations. Creating customized color palettes for our projects has been a way that we help realize and elevate what our clients most want to be surrounded by.

I’m vey proud about how we listen. We take time at the beginning of our projects to ask questions and hear the home owner’s goals, likes and dislikes. This helps our process to stay efficient and avoids multiple redesigns months down the road.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Two things I would say – kindness and creativity.

The design and construction process is hard and can be very stressful. Being a kind, patient member of the team is so vital for all trades as well as the homeowners.

And then creativity not just to avoid cookie cutter homes, but because sometimes we need creative solutions to design problems.
