Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Dorsey.
Monica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About me: I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. I’ve had numerous struggles and in college, the mental struggle was real. I went to a total of 3 different schools in search for happiness and basketball. I was mentally barely surviving but Got kept me. I battled depression and anxiety for three years but God kept pulling me through. I went to Texas College my last two years which was an HBCU in East, Texas, where I then became a White-House All-Star Ambassador for the White House Initiative on HBCU’s. I learned how to present to stakeholders, CEO’s, and other shareholders. We met much of the White House Cabinet, worked with different government programs and promoted black excellence. I played in the RedRiver Conference 🏀. I graduated in May of 2018, Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Social Work. After College, I played overseas in Rome, Venice, Florence, and Italy. God gave me the vision to start Endless Potential at the Woman Evolve Conference with Sarah Jakes Roberts . It was clear as day and I’m happy I was able to see His vision surrounding hundreds of leaders like me. I’ve always been the type of person to go against the grain. I’ve never been a follower. Leadership is a mindset and I believe God wants to impact many people through my life. I am now a motivational speaker who speaks at conferences, high schools, and other Women entrepreneur events. I am a blogger for monicasmotivationalminutes.com, a coach for the Dallas Maverick Basketball Academy, and founder of Endless Potential. Soon I hope to add author to the list because I hope to write my first book this year. To be honest…That’s what this is all about inspiring others in positive ways, making leaders, speaking life into others so they can make positive changes and impact someone else in a positive way. I believe you’re reading this for a reason, and if you’re ready to impact, and inspire others with us. ✊🏿 Never forget …WE ARE THE CHANGE
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road as a child; I struggled with making friends. I grew up at G.C.A. And when I transferred, I realized that I was socially awkward. Therefore middle school was full of awkward moments and acne. In high school, I learned that basketball was my talent . I lived, breathed and slept the game. Having a father who coached the game for over 30 years I had been playing since I was 5. Hooping became a crutch and something I leaned on in uncomfortable moments. It wasn’t until my second school where I had to go through a grueling tryout process and ended up getting cut from the team. I quickly went into a depression and I didn’t understand why God would take the one thing I loved away? Why would He take it from me? Why would He leave me? And I truly felt alone and worthless. It was a defining moment for me because that I realized all my worth came from what I could do on the court, how I could please my coaches, what I could do for other people, family, and friends. That was a defining moment for me because I had forgotten to whom I belonged and that I belonged to God because He calls us WORTHY. He calls us VALUED. He calls us LOVED. I left that school because God had greater plans for me and became a White House Ambassador. Now I take my story and share it with athletes all over the metroplex and beyond.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Endless Potential – what should we know?
Endless Potential is a platform where we’re able to highlight people who have many gifts and talents, who are creative beings that want to impact, and who are doing various things in Dallas. We debut different people and give them a platform to share their story. We allow for them to see that they have endless potential and endless opportunities through encouragement and empower them in their own individual stories. We specialize in empowerment through photoshoots and we’re known for our inspiration. We allow interviewees to share their message of inspiration and ultimately, it empowers other viewers to keep persevering as well. What sets us apart is that we are made up of Believers. Apart from God, we can do nothing. Just always making sure the God-aspect is present.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe my optimism and perseverance were game changers for me. I believe that if you can see the bright side in everything, it will take you far because with every negative you have to see something positive. Also, if you can get up when you’re constantly being knocked down, will change the trajectory of your whole life. Because if you can get up again after the things you’ve been through & look back on how far you’ve come; it will encourage you to go that much harder in your own journey.
