Meet Erika Webb of EneDesigns in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Webb.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally born and raised in Inglewood, CA and migrated to Sacramento, where I met my husband. We eventually settled in Pennsylvania where I gave birth to my daughter, then spent the next year and a half in Vancouver Canada, and subsequently, finally residing here in Dallas, TX. After a few years, we ended up divorcing and he moved back to California while my daughter and I stayed here in Dallas.

I dove into the Mortgage/Real Estate industry working as closing specialist, as I have worked in the field for approximately 16 years now, which has been a pretty rocky ride with the fluctuation of the market. I have always had a very creative spirit since I was a young child. Although I was quite shy, I never let it stop me from participating with the arts of expression. My hobbies expand to dancing, drawing, photography, anything where I can express myself artistically.

EneDesigns was created in January of 2012 as a challenge for me to create chic jewelry that was affordable and unique for others to enjoy. I have always loved art and being able to express myself creatively through paintings, drawing, and even sewing. I began my journey into designing jewelry; by challenging myself that I could create pieces for less than what others were paying. I was discussing with a co-worker about it, and she stated to show her the results once I’m finished. Long story short, she adored what I created, offered to purchase a few of the jewelry pieces that I had created and told others around the office about my work. Before I knew it, I was receiving requests from different customers for my jewelry designs. After receiving numerous requests, I decided to set up my newfound business, EneDesigns Simple & Chic Handcrafted Jewelry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been quite an interesting journey. Being a small business owner, I quickly learned that I must do everything myself. After being the creator, photographer, marketer, accountant, and other tasks of my own work, I’ve had a moment of realization what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming for one person to handle. One of the things I have learned that is okay, not to be great at everything when running your business. And that it is also okay to ask for help and find others that are great in areas that you may struggle within your business.

Some of the other struggles I’ve endured is not organizing the time to properly promote my business. With working full-time and focusing on my pieces, I haven’t allowed myself to squeeze in a schedule for getting my work out there, as with attending more vendor shows and increasing my customers have been difficult. Though, I have learned along the way with venturing in new business experiences and overcoming new challenges.

Please tell us about EneDesigns.
I create unique one of the kind men and women handmade jewelry, such as beaded bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. I also offer custom made orders for special events, such as wedding, gifts for family and friends, etc. I am most proud of my creativity and being able to express myself artistically through my jewelry. I believe it is a form of artwork and vision that you can wear as well. The feeling of being able to create artwork for others to enjoy and have a way to express their own creativity through my jewelry designs is rewarding to me.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories was when I was in high school. And they had special guest appearance from Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. They did a breathtaking performance and afterward, we were able to ask questions and meet some of the dancers. It was an amazing experience and a memory that I will never forget.
