Today we’d like to introduce you to Geminii Hubbard.
Geminii, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started cutting hair around the age of 14, which I’m now going on 28. It all started in the bathroom mirror, chopping my edges down trying to make an edge up out of edges full and absolutely NO IDEA of how to do what I was trying to do. Imagine the mess? Lol. At that time, I thought it looked great though, lol. I went from doing my own edge up to my best friend allowing me to practice on her and the love for cutting hair pretty much grew from thereon. I didn’t actually start cutting other people’s hair (aside us two) until around maybe 2014-2015… which even then I probably only edged like one other person up. I always knew from back then I wanted to cut hair, I’m just an all-around artist and couldn’t decide what I ultimately wanted to do fresh out of high school. I finally made the decision to just jump into SOMETHING I loved, outside of working on someone else’s clock, in 2016. I must say although I wish I had done so earlier, it’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love making other people look and feel good. That is one of the main things that keeps me driven, the love that grows in people’s eyes for THEMSELVES when they look in that mirror once I’m done is definitely a motivator for me every time I’m behind that chair.
I didn’t start doing dreads until about 4-5 months before I graduated barber school at the beginning of 2018. I started working with dreads dealing with my own. I figured if I can handle my own head, why not try doing others, right?! So, I did, and again, it was another one of the best decisions I ever made because it came naturally to me and so did perfecting the craft. Ima perfectionists with EVERYTHING I DO, literally. Someone could love something I’ve done, if I don’t love it myself, I’m going harder, no questions.
As far as my Brand SameOleG as a whole and my clothing line with it… that’s definitely something that’s been a passion since I was young as well. I still to this day have a booklet, I stapled together and made with a clothing line I wanted to start one day. I had the name, some sample drawings of what I wanted a few articles of clothing to look like, diagrams and everything in it. I believe I was far younger than 14 when I did this, that’s how long I’ve believed I would have a clothing line. Although my line isn’t the same as what I wanted back then, it’s definitely something I can go far with today and I absolutely won’t stop until SameOleG is a powerhouse.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think I can speak for just about everyone when I say, being a self-employed, entrepreneur is NOT easy and NEVER going to be a smooth road all the way. Whether you start with advantages, connects, plugs, money, or none of the above I still believe you’re going to feel the real at some point when it comes to trying to make your personal dreams come true.
From little to no motivation from a family with my dreams, from believing/knowing I can to being scared of my own dreams because they’re soo big. From having to still work a full-time job and at the same time try to fulfill all the requirements from my school. From eventually having to quit a full-time job that’s making all your ends meet, to having to step out on faith and work from the ground up with your talent, hope and bare hands. They don’t see the going broke to make your dreams come true. The nights you went back to eating sandwiches because that’s really all you had. They don’t see you behind on your bills because you really don’t get it any more right now because you quit that job to put your 100% into your business and it isn’t going in your favor ALL THE WAY, JUST YET. The people you thought would believe in you but all of a sudden, they aren’t there. The people that don’t contact you anymore because they couldn’t get a discount or special treatment because “I know you”. From taxes, to learning your own finances in and out, having all your paperwork for the state as far as your business is concerned, making sure you cover all your corners all day, every day… and still try to make sure everyone around you is happy while you stress yourself thin trying to elevate and figure things out as you go… they don’t see that.
I could go on and on about what we as entrepreneurs go through to make our dreams come through, but all pity aside I wouldn’t change not one struggle I’ve been through to this day. I appreciate everything and regret just about nothing except the chances I didn’t take when I had them. I would never take time out of the trials I’ve been through and am set to go through, to complain. I just feel like… MAKE ME OVER!
I love it!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m currently a Master Barber/Stylist and Loctician. I specialize in fades of all hair types, shear cuts, beard/mustache trims, razor shaves, facials, scalp maintenance, eyebrow arching/cleaning, dread starting, Retwisting and styling, and hair coloring/bleaching.
I also am an artist, draw, graphic design and run SameOleG as a versatile clothing brand.
One thing I’m most proud of is my perseverance. As I’m sure we almost all have been, I can only speak for myself when I talk about the things I’ve gone through, gotten through and am destined to overcome. My slogan for SameOleG is “Forever Evolving, Never Changing” and I mean that to the core. I will always strive to be a better me, but I’ll never change who I truly am and will always follow what truly defines me and makes me ME.
The one thing that sets me apart from others is how adamant I am about perfection. I don’t cut corners, I don’t half step, I’m not comfortable with slack or complacency. I truly believe if it wasn’t for the mud I cleaned off my shoes to get where I am today, it probably wouldn’t feel as good. I work every day to make sure I’m doing any and every part of my craft better than the day before, I don’t allow myself to get bored because I’m always finding ways to evolve, that will forever allow me to reign in my own lighting.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been, which I still am today, just a bit more polished with it, laidback AND outgoing at the same time. Yes, you’re allowed to laugh or squint at that lol. I can remember back from even in elementary, I’ve always made people feel good, laugh a lot, I keep people on their toes. Let my ma tell it I talked a lot, but in other cases, I hardly made a sound. I think that’s neither here nor there because different people bring out different sides to me and auras.
I was well off into science, and nature. I loved the outdoors and still do, aside from the fact I’m way less carefree now, I still love the outdoors. I’ve always been a country city girl. I grew up being in the country all the time so just something as simple as riding horses or 4wheelers, trail rides, fishing and so on is everything to me. I’ve always had a deep love for fashion, music, writing, and a little cooking and really those things have never left me to this day.
