Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Charles.
Glenn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A handful of situations have been pivot along my journey.
Several years ago, I took a DevaCurl haircutting class and began cutting loose curly and wavy hair. I talked a few of my regular client into letting me practice what I had learned. One client, in particular, adopted the Curly Girl Method for a month and then six months and then two years.
A few years later, my coworker Angela Hicks went on maternity leave. But, before leaving, she told me that the outgoing message on her salon voicemail said—‘…if you need to get in before I get back, go and see Glenn. Be patient with him because he’s afraid. But, he knows what he’s doing.’
I couldn’t say no because she had vouched for me. But, I was so nervous thinking about all the what-ifs. It seemed like Angela was gone for four or five months; I’m sure it was only a few weeks. During her time away, I gained the confidence to work with more challenging hair textures. And then on Father’s Day 2015, I fractured my humerus. My doctor would not let me cut hair for three months. Those three months were long and boring, but the break helped me to realize how much I loved doing hair.
Shortly after my return, someone said to me, ‘…you can’t make a living just doing curly hair.’ I thought it was one of the dumbest things that I had ever heard. I replied that I would be perfectly happy if every person who sat in my chair from that day forward had naturally curly hair. Saying this aloud was an important admission that lead to my current success.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you? The challenges to my success have been situations teaching me to trust my intuition and opportunities to gain confidence in myself. As an example, I gave away every client with tight curls until Angela Hicks caused me to stop. She has been major figure in my success because she believed in me so that I could learn to believe in myself.
Self-doubt and fears that sooner or later people will realize that I don’t know anything about curly hair crop up from time to time. In spite of those struggles, last summer I started planning my own salon and opened for business at the beginning of 2019.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a boutique salon in the Dallas Design District specializing in haircutting and color services for women who wear their natural curl. (That sounds kinda pretentious. 🙂 ) I further narrow my niche by focusing on tighter curls.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Looking back on the events that have shaped my current success, I cannot say how luck affected me, but I can say that it has felt easy.
