Meet Greg Garcia of Proletas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Garcia.

Greg, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ten years ago, after a particularly tough workout, I wanted a better alternative for a post-workout snack than just another sad shaker cup of protein powder, and was given the idea of a protein ice cream bar.

I went home, designed what I thought would be perfect in macros, and used my four kids as a taste test. Once they said, “Hey Dad, this is pretty good!”, we knew we were on to something. From there, it was doing all the things, finding a co-manufacturer, designing packaging, and then finding how to get these delicious beauties to the people.

Today, our Proletas high protein ice cream bars are carried online (no small feat for a frozen product), and in approximately 40+ gyms and supplement shops throughout the DFW.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey from a concept to a real product was full of challenges on its own, from creating a formula that scaled up into a commercial kitchen to figuring out all of the nuances of proper packaging, to working through how to get this frozen product to the people.

The journey from making a product to making a sustainable business is another one I’m still working through. I’ve found that a consumer packaged good (CPG) product is capital intensive, and having one that has to be frozen temperature controlled from birth through use is even more expensive.

But the good thing is it is ice cream, and people love ice cream.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So, we at Proletas make a high protein ice cream bar, that was created as a post workout protein recovery snack. So, its got a great macro nutrient profile with up to 31 grams of protein per bar, AND it tastes great. We want to get it to the place where it will be most effective, so we partner with local gyms to sell out of their pro shops.

Our bars are made for athletes, and have a real serving of protein per serving. A lot of other things marketed as “protein added” only have that kind of protein count if you eat the whole container. And that would mean all the extra calories and carbs and whatever is in it too.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I have grown up in the DFW area, and worked in Dallas for most of my adult life. I love that Dallas has great people, great food, and plenty to do. I do dislike that there is regularly traffic all the time now.

Pricing:

  • $6.49 a bar, online, chocolate, key lime pie, strawberry, vanilla, cherry limeade, cappuccino, dark chocolate, coconut
