Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Pederson.
Jamie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I lived in NYC for many years and attended graduate school at New York University. I was lucky enough to study under some brilliant minds in the psychology community and work in a private practice in the heart of the city. I met my now husband while living in New York on a blind date; we had a fairy-tale romance in the city and had just moved in together and welcomed a baby french bulldog when he dropped the boom on me! He had been offered a fantastic professional opportunity in Dallas and had a whopping 72 hours to decide if he would accept it.
At the time, it was unthinkable to leave our beloved city and the tremendous friends we each accumulated over our time there. However, Dallas has been a delightful surprise for us both. We moved in 2014 and I was lucky enough to join a group practice that was integral in connecting me with the broader mental health community in Dallas as well as to work with incredibly talented colleagues who became friends. We fully leaned into the Texas experience and even bought a house (unthinkable to our NYCers). We’ve become immersed in our M streets community and enjoy nothing more than congregating with our friends for food and drinks.
Last year, I opened Dallas Emotional Health with a partner and friend. We are a private outpatient mental health practice specializing in evidence-based therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Connecting with clients and helping to empower them to cope with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns is one of the great joys and callings of my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Are any roads smooth, ha? The last five years have been full of joy and incredible milestones such as marriage to my wonderful husband and the start of a private practice but also of tremendous pain. My family and I are weathering the pain of terminal illness and the slow process of grief and loss. Yet, as I reflect on the whole of life, I think that our greatest suffering often lives right alongside our greatest joy. Learning to allow the two to exist together has been a big lesson in the last decade of my life.
Dallas Emotional Health – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dallas Emotional Health is a private outpatient mental health practice intended to serve those who are struggling with anxiety, depression, mood disorder, parenting concerns, behavioral difficulties, or other emotional concerns. As licensed therapists with specializations in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based practices, my partner (Dr. Tabatha Chansard) and I believe in empowering clients to manage their emotional health through the knowledge and implementation of increased, targeted, and self-supportive coping skills. Dallas Emotional Health offers treatment across the lifespan with Dr. Chansard specializing in the treatment of children and adolescents and me focusing treatment on older adolescents and adults.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, for me, is endeavoring to spend my time in a manner congruent with my core values of family, connection, and emotional wellness. Maintaining an orientation to our core values can be difficult in a life filled with so many demands and challenges; however, doing so often results in the highest level of well-being and satisfaction.
