Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Gilmore.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2007 I started my business officially, focusing on weddings and portraits. 5 Years ago I really started focusing on commercial and corporate clients. Going from advertising on Craig’s List to now having worked with various national clients such as HP, Loreal, Red Bull, and numerous DFW based clients, is a dream come true. I am always focused on giving my clients the image that fits their brands and benefits them. Aside from growing with clients, I have also expanded by what and how I shoot, going from photo only to photo and video and now as a licensed drone pilot I have even more to offer my clients and community.
In my business my clients come first, whether a new or established client and I love helping businesses and people.
I once read a quote from another entrepreneur that said “I work 60 hours a week to avoid working 40” and there is much truth to that. Growing up my friends always said I was born to be an entrepreneur and I love the push and the work it requires and also the opportunities it allows, with my business I have been able meet amazing people and to travel all over the states as well as places like Costa Rica and Italy and this also allows me to shoot landscapes which is another passion of mine.
This is my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not. Building a business is never easy. I wouldn’t be where I am without pushing myself, without my family’s encouragement and without making awesome connections with people. I hate when people say “I built this myself” because no one would be where they are without someone giving them an opportunity such as that new client.
I remember very early being on the way to a wedding shoot with $75 in my bank account and I got a flat tire. I was so stressed worrying about even affording gas for the weekend and the flat just added to it. When I got to the wedding the mother asked if I could stay an extra 2 hours and paid more that evening, I was so thankful and it was also eye opening to show how important budgeting and keeping my cool would be for me to succeed, I also saw how I never wanted to be in that tight of a situation again.
Trying to build relationships with clients has been the biggest struggle, as many business owners in the area are less likely to use new photo and video producers and it is difficult to reach those people, it is also expensive to market the proper ways.
But, once I get a new client they usually stick with my company.
J & J Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in commercial and corporate photo and video production. This includes fashion, product, landscapes, cityscapes, corporate events, conferences, real estate, promo videos, I am also a licensed drone pilot, I tell people I shoot everything, and I mean it. I don’t want to be stuck in a box nor only have one specialty. I enjoy shooting new projects & working with new clients.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I told my wife the other day that it is extremely uplifting to see new clients reach out to me. To me success is when clients reach out to you for services. That right there tells me I have done something right.
But believe me I am not stagnate. I am always looking to build and establish new clients and make new connections so I am always looking for new ways to improve and enhance as well.
