Today we’d like to introduce you to Javontae Kelson.
Javontae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I Javontae L. Kelson is publicly known as Kels Minor. I was born and raised in the state of Louisiana. Growing up, my influences were Mia X, Lil Boosie, Eminem, and Lauryn Hill. I began making music at the age of nine. Music has always been such a great inspiration and joy to my soul. Music takes me to a whole different universe, regardless of the genre. Everyday, life and sights are what inspire me to write music. When my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it made me dive even deeper into the music because it was the only thing to ease my mind. It inspired me to keep pushing and continue to tell my stories through music. I am always positive, no matter the situation. People would describe me as a light in a dark room with a heart of gold. I formed an independent record label called F.O.G MUSIC and have been scouting talent of my own ever since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would definitely have to disagree about it being a smooth road. There have been so many challenges along this journey. Trials and tribulations that makes you want to stop everything. Depression, incarceration, multiple deaths of loved ones, and so much more. I was faced with so many things that makes you want to give up, but it really only made me stronger and put more thought/life into my music.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
F.O.G MUSIC LLC came about in 2018 but wasn’t actually formed until 2020. We are an independent record label that is all about originality. Our motto is to focus on greatness, always be authentic, and never change. We do not change who a person is. We see a person for who they are. We let every artist and member of the team remain true to their art and identity when it comes to music. That is what sets us apart from anyone else. The biggest accomplishment that we are most proud of is being noticed and streamed in 20 different countries in less than six months.
99 percent of my music is storytelling. It describes things I’ve seen, done, experienced, and or the emotions that I am feeling at that specific moment. Every bar in each song is based on real life events so when you listen to the music, you’ll understand my background a little better.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck. I am a strong believer of faith. With faith, dedication, and motivation, anything is possible.
