Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennyfer Keohane.
Hi Jennyfer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a native New Yorker who was raised in East New York and Bed Stuy. My family is Puerto Rican, German, and Irish. I came to Texas to meet my birth mother. While here I met my future husband and went to college in Tyler, Dallas and Arlington. In college I trained a theatre and musical production with a side of paramedicine. This led me to a career in make-up, body art, and special FX. I have 2 children with Autism who live with me.
Currently, I work as a freelance artist in independent film. My most recent project is The Cyber-Psycho Chronicles filmed in Rowlett Texas. I also travel Texas and Louisiana working as a face painter for Reptile shows. I create wearable artwork and fun brightly colored creepy stuff. I spend my time off rescuing and rehabbing bully-breed dogs and reptiles…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am diagnosed with ADHD and PTSD. I’m a former foster kid, so there are a lot of struggles that come with that. We lost my youngest sister to gang violence in 1997 and my birth mother to drug addiction in 2016.
But I just cope and keep moving.
I wouldn’t be who I am without my struggles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love the creepy and morbid stuff but also love bright colors and glitter. I try to meld those things together in my artwork. Working in FX can be pretty morbid and a little jarring but then I have my face painting with kids at shows and it helps balance me.
My jewelry and wearable art is an example of that. Glow in the dark Skulls, bones, tentacles and blood dominates my artwork when I’m not drawing animals I work with.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I used to play roller derby. I’m a big kid.
I baby-talk my animals, even the more agro ones like my iguanas.
Despite my childhood trauma I try to see the positive in everything and I’m a firm believer that nothing is so bad that you can’t conquer it.
