Meet Jon Murray of Fitness Solutions in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Murray.

Jon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Fitness Solutions opened in 1997 and its grand opening in January of 1998. It is a one-man operation dedicated to client results through education and innovation. I believe in teaching my clients about the ability of their brain. They can then use their brain to build the sensitivities necessary to strengthen their bodies in the safest most effective and time efficient manner.

It is through the signals that the body is giving about the development of fatigue that an individual can. When he or she has stimulated her body for change and that can be known by the individual if given the right instructions.

We use mindfulness and resistance training to achieve the necessary awareness so that one can maximize their time in the gym.

This approach has been developed from the 44 years I have been participant, student and observer of the iron game.

I started lifting when I was eleven years old in my garage in south central Los Angeles. Then it was about being able to defend myself in a rough environment.

I moved to Texas in 1977 with my mother and use resistance training to help me play football. I learned it takes more than weightlifting to play football because I rode the pine.

I went to college at the University of Texas at Arlington where I studied physical education and meet my needs for competition and achievement in the sport of Powerlifting.

I didn’t finish school but got a job at Millwood psychiatric hospital where I work in recreational therapy and got my first certification at the Cooper Clinic.

From there, I work for Bally’s Total Fitness as a personal trainer. I had a lot of experience working with a variety of clients. What I found out there is that it is one thing to train yourself and another to train other people.

This lead me to get a resistance training specialist certification from Tom Purvis’s Organization up on Oklahoma. What I learn there was how to learn and how to apply what I learned to my clients.

I have continued to learn from different sources about meditation, mindfulness and neuroscience. I have found that physiology and biomechanics could get me so far with client but the missing ingredient is them. Their brains run the show so why don’t I teach them how their brains work so that they can gain the awareness to apply good mechanical and physiological principles to themselves. I think it is the right mix of mind body training.

My approach allows one to use the mind body approaches of yoga, meditation and Tao Chi with resistance training to give one a really effective, safe, and time efficient workout experience.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have had many struggles along the way from divorce, personal struggles and the day to day struggles of running my own business. I don’t always like the struggles but I love what I do so much that I am willing to face them because I don’t want to do anything else. My greatest joy in life is seeing my clients realize who they are and the power they have to change their life and love themselves more.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fitness Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
My approach sets me apart because I don’t know anyone who is combining mind body approaches to resistance training.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck? I don’t know. Some things that I would have said were unlucky have been a benefit and things I thought were good have been a hindrance.

I am grateful for all of my experiences because they have shaped who I am today.
