Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Burris.
Hi Jordan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Before I became a mom, I was the “fun aunt” — always looking for cool places to take my nephews whenever they visited from their small town about an hour outside of Dallas. Every time they came to the “big city,” I wanted to make it special with fun, kid-friendly adventures. Back then, I often wished there was a resource dedicated specifically to kids’ activities in Dallas — something simple, helpful, and easy to follow.
That desire only grew once I had kids of my own. I found that most local accounts were either too broad, mixed in with adult-focused events, or heavily tied to the creator’s personal life. I didn’t have time to sift through irrelevant posts, and I craved honest recommendations over sponsored content. So I decided to create what I couldn’t find — and that’s how @dallasforkids was born.
At first, it was just a fun side project. But after welcoming my second child and stepping away from my job for a bit, I had more time and creative energy to pour into it. It’s become such a rewarding way to blend my love for exploring the city, creating content, and being a mom — all while helping other families discover fun things to do in Dallas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, yes — it really has been a smooth and fun journey. One of the reasons it’s felt that way is because I’ve never put too much pressure on myself when it comes to the account. From the beginning, I approached it with the mindset that it should add to my life, not take away from it.
Of course, there have been moments where I felt pulled in different directions — especially as a mom of young kids. But I’ve always made it a point to keep my priorities in check. My role as a mother comes first, and this account is something I get to enjoy and pour into when time and energy allow. That balance helps keep it fun, sustainable, and authentic — which is exactly what I want it to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run an Instagram account called @dallasforkids, which I created as a go-to resource for parents and caregivers looking for kid-friendly things to do in and around Dallas. My goal from day one was to keep the content niche, transparent, and genuinely useful. Parenting — especially with little ones — can feel overwhelming, and I wanted to create something that makes life just a little bit easier.
I imagine someone waking up, feeling stir-crazy, thinking, “What am I going to do with these kids today?” — and immediately heading to @dallasforkids to find something fun and doable. That’s why every reel cover has big, clear text that tells you exactly what it’s about, and my story highlights are organized by things like age group, weather, and season. Every caption follows the same format too: location, cost, age range, and hours — so you don’t have to dig for the basics.
I think what sets me apart is consistency and honesty. Even when I’m invited somewhere, I always give my real opinion. And I keep the focus entirely on the activities, not myself or my family. I want the account to stay true to its purpose — a helpful, no-fluff guide for busy parents who just need solid ideas.
I’m really proud that what started as a simple idea has grown into a trusted resource for so many families. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that it’s actually helping people enjoy their time together.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I love most about Dallas is how accessible it feels. No matter where you are, it seems like everything is just about 30 minutes away — which makes the city feel more connected and manageable, especially compared to other large cities I’ve lived in, like Houston.
I also love how much growth is happening in and around Dallas. New attractions, businesses, and family-friendly destinations are constantly popping up, and it’s been exciting to watch the area evolve. Whether you’re living in the heart of the city or out in the suburbs, it’s truly a great place to raise a family. There are amazing schools, strong communities, and so many ways to get plugged in — especially through churches and local events.
Honestly, I don’t have many complaints. I feel really grateful to be planted here, both personally and as someone who gets to highlight what Dallas has to offer for families.
