Meet Justin Tipton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Tipton.

Hi Justin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I first started out playing solo acoustic shows at coffee shops around Dallas. Things really took a turn for me in 2019 when I was fortunate enough to work with one of my favorite bands (The Band of Heathens) during the recording and release of my first album (self-titled). That album took me to a position in my career that allowed me to hire my own band (The Troublemakers) and put us on the road to where we are now. Currently, we tour as much as possible across the country, we are now playing theaters and festivals, and have had the opportunity to open for some of our heroes on some incredible and historic stages.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
That’s a tough question. In some ways, yes because I think anyone who gets to do what they love and make a living doing it is living the best life they can (at least in terms of career). In other ways no, because you learn the paths to success in the music industry and it’s not pretty. You quickly learn that the music industry, oftentimes, has nothing to do with talent. If it did, there would be many more folks at the top of the food chain.

That’s neither here nor there, but it takes a lot of money, energy, and time to learn the ropes. Which is only half the battle, because you still have to climb your way to the top. I’ve been fortunate enough to have people at the top give me pointers, advice and introduce me to the right people who helped me get to where I am today. And I look forward to the opportunity where I can do that for others one day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer-songwriter and front-man for an Americana band, “Justin Tipton & The Troublemakers”. I’m not sure what we’re known for, other than playing rock n’ roll shows.

I’m most proud of how we’ve evolved as a band. I think what sets us apart is we don’t belong to anyone group/genre. We’re not country enough for honky-tonks, not blues enough for the blues joints, and no one can really put us into a corner (which I love).

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m definitely a risk-taker. I think anyone who does what I do for a living is taking a risk because there’s so much uncertainty in this industry. Especially for people like me who have a family to feed and take care of. Thankfully I have a family who allows me to chase my dreams, and be gone for as long as I am at times. Missing your kids’ “firsts” are never easy but it’s the price we pay as touring musicians.
