Meet Katy Day of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Day.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Katy Day, I am a local DFW queer musician.
I have been in music since forever.
When I was a kid, I had multiple instruments to play around on and learn. I got a karaoke machine probably around 8 ish and started singing disco and classic rock non stop!!
My family has been incredibly supportive of my musical journey, and truly I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my Mom. I say “everyone needs a Brenda” because I truly wish everyone could have someone as supportive, uplifting, present, thoughtful, and kind in their lives.
I am also where I am at today because I go for it. I follow my dreams, I put myself out there!! I’ve learned that the worst someone can say is “no”, and there is so much opportunity given in life, and the opportunity not given sometimes you have to go find it yourself!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for Ol’ Katy Day. I have been through a lot of abuse, and healing through that has been incredibly helpful for my music. A lot of my music is written about the experiences I’ve had with people, the experiences I’ve had with abuse. Unfortunately, some of the devastating things I’ve been through are pretty common, especially for women and the queer community.
One of my biggest struggles maybe 5 ish years ago now was writing music that felt aligned with my soul. I wrote lots of music, nothing connected. After going through some intense therapy for a few years, that helped open up parts of me that I didn’t know were closed off. I then wrote my first song I was able to connect with and that felt genuine- Sally’s Song!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full time musician!! My genre blends folk, singer-songwriter, and indie together. I’m known for my folky fingerpicking, my sapphic and yearning lyrics, and my Rayban Jajo’s.

I am most proud of where I am every single day. Every day I am growing, getting closer and being exactly where I want to be. Little Katy always wanted to be a famous musician, and I do music full time now. I am recognized in public now by strangers who know my music, I am helping people I have never met. This is everything I have ever wanted, and I feel so fortunate to be living my dream and watching my music grow as fast as it has been. Little Katy must be so proud!!

Something that sets me apart from others is that I want to build a community. A safe space for feelings, for each other, for that deeper connection. I feel like sometimes in the music community you run into cliques.
You meet the people who only ever invite you to their shows, but never show up to yours. The ones who keep you out of their circle, whether you’re a listener or another musician.
I want everyone there with me, and I want to be able to be there for everyone in whatever way I can!! Whether that be through my music or the opportunity to show up for people!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I want to use this area to say thank you.
Thank you to everyone who has been there for me and supported me. To everyone who has played and shared my songs, and came to see me live. Thank you to my Mom for supporting me in absolutely every single way.
You being here for me, with me, sharing this journey together, means everything to me.
Thank you to VoyageDallas Magazine for interviewing me and giving me this platform to connect with people.
I truly wouldn’t be here without you, I appreciate you more than you know.
