Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Browne.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kelli. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I developed a love for baking and cake decorating in 2008. As an artist and sculptor, this new medium allowed a constant outlet for creativity. When my husband joined the Army in 2008, I had to find a way to have an income working from home while I took care of our 3 small children. I started Creative Crumbs in 2009 by selling cakes to people in Ft. Irwin, CA, our first duty station. I became extremely busy with custom orders; I realized that I had a desire to teach others what I knew about cake decorating, so I started teaching a basic cake decorating class to other military spouses. My husband received orders to go to Hawaii in 2010… So we moved! Aloha! I created my business FB page, and began receiving orders for cakes even before we were assigned our house in Hawaii. Once we had our house, I began teaching the classes again, and had a steady flow of business. We moved to TX in 2013; I decided that I needed more knowledge about the business of baking, so I went to school at the Art Institute of Dallas to earn a degree in baking and pastry in 2015. Since then, I’ve had a steady flow of business and have continued running my business from home.
Has it been a smooth road?
The only real struggles I’ve had are when I’ve had to move from state to state since my husband was in the Army. It isn’t easy getting a steady flow of customers in a town / city and then moving to a completely different state and have to rebuild my whole customer base again. For the most part though, business has been smooth when I’m busy.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I like to do sculpted cakes the most, anything that is challenging is what I get excited about. I’m most proud of the quality of my work. I strive for perfection every time, even though that is impossible…. I just always do my best. I feel like what sets me apart from other cake decorators is that I can draw, paint and sculpt.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Dallas area is full of extremely talented cake decorators and pastry chefs. The number of people needing custom orders for their events exceeds the number of these talented people… so there is always work. This is a great place to have a business.
