Meet Kimberly Parker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Parker.

Hi Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Kimberly Parker. I am a doctoral student and the owner of Revive to Thrive Wellness Center, a group practice serving the needs of Texas residents. I am passionate about serving people of color, who have the desire to break unhealthy generational patterns and want to do a better job of loving themselves. My clients and I work together to improve their self esteem, learn communication skills, manage their emotions, and resolve past trauma that prevents them from being their best/highest selves.

There are many life experiences that have contributed to where I am today, serving in the roles of a group practice owner, therapist, and doctoral student; however, there are a few key moments that have inspired my steps along the way. First, I was inspired my Dr. Steven Frieze from CSU Dominguez Hills to serve as a transformative and passionate counselor and professor. Second, I was encouraged by Dr. Fred Rabinowitz from the University of Redlands to earn a second master’s in counseling, a degree that led to licensure. Next, I was motivated by amazing professors at the University of North Texas to complete my master’s degree in counseling and earn my doctorate degree in counseling (that is currently in progress)… a decision that activated the courage I needed to birth Revive to Thrive Wellness Center, a thriving group practice.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While being a group practice owner has its rewards, the road has not been smooth throughout the journey, as there have been some ups and downs. I believe my biggest challenge has been learning business and leaderships skills, two subjects that counseling programs don’t prepare you for. There has been a nice learning curve; however, with the support of my team (colleagues, business coach, attorney, and accountant), running a group practice has been a lot more doable and enjoyable. I am very big on asking for help, as I know that I can’t do it all… something that I encourage my loved ones and clients to do as well, as we all need a little help sometimes.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Throughout my time in the mental health field, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals, couples, groups, and families. I heavily rely on being genuine, nonjudgmental, and empathetic. I believe in collaborating with my clients because they are the experts of their lives! I am merely a facilitator to help ensure that they get back on track and live the lives that they were always meant to live.

There are many counselors across the globe, and I believe there is a counselor-client match for everyone. I also believe that we all have characteristics that set us apart. Regarding what sets me apart, I think about what a former boss said to me when she told me why they decided to hire me over the other applicant. She said that we could both make dinner, but if I served dinner, it would be a 5-course meal. While this might seem like a silly analogy, she was spot on. I pride myself on offering legendary service to my clients, serving them with my whole heart and soul, in a non-judgmental, empathetic, and quirky way. I LOVE what I GET to do and I believe it shows.

On a personal note, I am a California native. I love the beach, and I am working on a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. Go Mean Green! Working in my calling as a counselor is my jam, but being an auntie is my favorite role of all. I love my kiddos and they love me (especially when I pay them for chores or sing Disney tunes in the car with them).

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Oh, that is a great question. I love that each city tells it own story and you can get a different feel wherever you go. What I like least about our city, my hometown, San Diego beaches, or Big Bear mountains are not here… Yup, I am a California girl at heart… however, I still love my new home, Texas.
