Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Johnson.
Hi Kristy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My maternal grandparents were entertainers (my grandmother was a vocalist, my grandfather a jazz trumpet player) so I guess they passed down the fever. My early years were filled with choral groups through school, including the Dallas Girls’ Chorus, and also marching band. In my teens, I branched into country music and started working within the Opry circuit. Somewhere in my 20’s I shifted into rock, and it’s been a wild ride ever since. I’ve gotten such wonderful, memorable (and yes – humorous) experiences on stages across the country!
I’ve participated in and owned multiple bands across many different genres. It’s hard to nail down my favorite type, because there’s so much to love and appreciate about all types of music. My husband, Glenn Johnson, and I currently own 5 different bands. We have Waterloo – A Celebration of ABBA, Even It Up – The Ultimate Heart Tribute, Ever The Essence – The Evanescence Experience, Disco Inferno – Ignite the Night (a disco cover band) and Burning Sky (a classic to current rock cover band.) We also are co-owners (with Phil Scholling) of Winter’s Night – The TSO Experience. Each one is so different and I never get bored. I have a busy schedule that’s filled with music!
I also own my own vocal coaching business. The Performance Lab – Professional Vocal Coaching is focused on bringing out the best overall performance for each individual. It’s about more than superior vocal technique; it’s about gaining confidence and a comfort level on stage that allows a performer to captivate an audience.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely not been an easy road. Being in bands can be very difficult for spouses/significant others. Early in my career, I’ve encountered quite a few that didn’t like having a girlfriend being away at night, singing on a stage somewhere. I can understand that perfectly, and there were a couple of times in the past that I stepped away from performing. But my luck changed dramatically when I met my husband, Glenn Johnson. Glenn is every bit as much of a music lover and performer, so I have the extreme pleasure of being on this musical journey WITH him. This makes me incredibly happy and the moments I share with him on stage are incredible.
There are challenges, but they are worth it. There are many musicians/vocalists involved across all of our projects, and getting things organized where everyone is available when needed or open for rehearsal can be tricky, but the “up side” is that we have the great fortune of working with some of the best that Dallas has to offer. We love our band family and care a great deal about each other.
