Meet Lakeia Simmons of Loc N Kei in Grand Prairie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeia Simmons.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lakeia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first started my own locs about nine years ago. I would often twist my own hair just playing around. Over the years I was back and forth about what I wanted to do with my life. I was blessed with an opportunity to move to Dallas in September 2015. Coming from Charlotte NC the move wasn’t easy leaving my family and friends but I know it was in God’s plan for me to relocate. And I stepped out on faith. I always wanted to start a dreading brand, but I was putting others 1st. One day someone really close to me (Cherie Mckinney and Linda Wilkins) spoke with me about how God wanted me to work in my gift and not for others. At 1st I would only book clients I worked with not pushing myself. 2019 I started to focus more and get my name out there. I went and got some business cards, made an Instagram and Facebook about my business and it’s been an upward journey ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth rode. But I was always taught to trust the process. One of my biggest struggles, in the beginning, was staying focused. I was always partying and hanging out rather than promoting my self and getting my brand out to others.

Tell us more about the business.
Loc N Kei specializes in loc maintenance including washing, retwisting, styling and reattaching locs. With the key (KEI) to virgin extensions as well (Bundles). What makes me most proud of Loc N Kei is not only does each and every one of my clients leave my chair with a clean fresh hairstyle, they also leave with knowledge of starting their own business as well. We talk about our futures and any advice we can give each other and supporting one another to build each other up. I treat each and everyone of them as if they are family and I let them know that they are greatly appreciated. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not in the business for money God gave me a gift to not only do hair but to change lives while doing it.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I had a rough childhood. Growing up I watched my mom struggle to make ends meet but she never gave up. She always instilled in my siblings and I that no matter what the circumstances are God will make a way. I always kept my faith and knew that God was showing me the journey of the struggle so that I’ll know what it feels like to be without. That’s what taught me to be so humble. I wouldn’t call it good or bad luck I look at everything the good and bad as blessings.
