Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Kendall.
Hi Liz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
What started over 30 years ago as little moments hand-embroidering alongside my Abuela blossomed into something bigger than we ever imagined. Built on love, culture, and creativity, Genny Bellas is now a multi-generation, Afro-Hispana Latina, woman-owned small business proudly run alongside my Bellas — Tatyana, Genesis, and Aliza. From custom embroidery and DTF printing to handcrafted jewelry, pins. We also have hand-dipped incense which is done by my daughter and her business Sacred Smoke, every piece we create carries a little bit of our family story and is made with love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many small businesses, especially in the embroidery and handmade industry, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Balancing creativity with the business side — pricing, supplies, deadlines, marketing, and long hours — has taken a lot of patience and learning. There were moments of burnout, slow seasons, and times where we had to figure things out as we went.
As a family-run business, we’ve also had to learn how to juggle everyday life while still showing up for our customers and our craft. But every struggle helped us grow stronger, more skilled, and more appreciative of how far we’ve come. Seeing people support our work and trust us with meaningful pieces has made all the hard work worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Genny Bellas, we specialize in custom embroidery and personalized pieces that celebrate culture, creativity, and meaningful moments. From embroidered apparel and accessories to custom keepsakes, event pieces, and handcrafted incense made by my daughter through her business Sacred Smoke, everything we create is made with care, detail, and a personal touch. What started as a passion passed down through generations has grown into a family-run business rooted in craftsmanship, love, and tradition.
We’re especially known for creating pieces that feel personal and unique — whether it’s custom embroidery for organizations, special events, small businesses, one-of-a-kind gifts, or hand-dipped incense blends that help create comforting and intentional spaces. We love bringing our customers’ visions to life and creating items that hold sentimental value.
What we’re most proud of is creating a generational legacy of women creating together. Watching something that began with bonding with my grandmother grow into a business shared with my daughter and family has been incredibly rewarding.
What sets us apart is the heart behind our work. We’re not just creating products — we’re creating pieces with meaning, culture, and connection behind them. Every order is handled with intention, and our customers become part of the Genny Bellas story.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is family, legacy, and creating with purpose. It’s also important to me that the people who support our business feel connected to what they receive. Whether it’s embroidery or handcrafted incense made by my daughter and her business. I want every piece to feel intentional and personal — not just something made quickly, but something created with care and heart behind it.
