Today we’d like to introduce you to Lloyd Lumpkins.
Lloyd formed L. Lumpkins Architects in 2007 to pursue his passion: architectural design based on classical influences. Born and raised in East Texas, Lloyd was influenced at an early age by the romantic revival styles of the early 1900’s prevalent in the old neighborhoods of his hometown. He saw how classical forms and detailing combined with proper scale and proportions created an elegance and grace that enriched the neighborhoods. Educated at Texas Tech, extensive travel and work in Europe and Asia, as well as outstanding mentors, has given Lloyd practical knowledge to pair with his talent for design.
Today, his firm helps clients “put form to their definition of home.” Lumpkins advocates an approach that stresses listening carefully to clients and understanding their preferences, lifestyles, hopes and dreams. “I guide and educate clients away from preconceptions and towards cohesive designs that respect the architectural style they’re pursuing,” Lumpkins explains. “The homes I design integrate their personalities. Done right, they become a joyful place that perfectly reflects who my clients are—that place they call home.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our Business is always up and down. When we are busy we worry about how we are going to get the work done. When we are slow we worry about when and where the next project will come in.
Biggest challenges have been managing time between passion of designing and the work of running a business. We rely on word of mouth from our clients for our next jobs and struggle to make time to nourish those relationships years after we design their homes.
Please tell us about L. Lumpkins Architects, Inc.
It is a small firm usually consisting of myself and one employee. We focus on designing homes tailored to our clients and their lifestyles.
We are known for our classical and romantic work. Recently we have started doing more modern designs. Mostly I am proud of the places we create that our clients call home. Those spaces where home and memories are made.
Our attention to detail and personal hands on approach I think is what sets us apart. When you hire us you get me and not some draftsman in the back. I put my heart and soul into every home I design as if it were for myself. I also stress teamwork. I want my clients to take ownership of their homes, to feel they were an integral part of designing their home.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Building dug-out forts in the fields near my home with childhood friends who I am still close to today. One of them became an architect as well and designs Churches. We were always building stuff. I remember we even built about a 20′ diameter metal frame geodesic dome in my backyard one time. When we were around 16.
