Today we’d like to introduce you to Maison Vasek.
Maison, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Oklahoma and raised in Texas. I ended up back in Oklahoma for college (OU – Boomer Sooner!), where I met my wife, Ashley. I graduated with a double major in Finance and Accounting, then moved to Dallas to start my career with KPMG. I spent the next eight years in public accounting with KPMG and Whitley Penn. Then, I spent four years as the CFO of two middle-market companies. I founded HMBL on April 1, 2019. In the beginning, it was just myself. Over the past 11 months, I’ve been blessed with growth and have had the opportunity to add seven great people to the HMBL team. We plan to double in 2020. I live in Lake Highlands with my wife of 10 years, Ashley, and my two daughters, Ava Bliss (6) and Lila J (4). I served on the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House of Dallas for the past six years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been smooth, but I also wouldn’t say it has been rough either. We’ve been blessed with tremendous growth, so the main struggle is hiring and growing well. Good people are hard to find, and great people are really hard to find. We want to be a firm of great people, so building the team with care is what is most important to me. There are a lot of CPA and consulting firms in Dallas, and we want to be different. Some have a great culture, and some have great talent. Building a firm with both is our goal. So, building the culture at the beginning is very important, and having a foundation of great talented people to build on is a priority.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
HMBL (humble) was founded with the simple mission of building a firm that builds others. I believe there is an opportunity for all business leaders to change and improve lives, relationships and homes. We are a firm with an entrepreneurial mindset that understands the volatility and excitement of growing companies. We offer financial accounting and operational advisory services as well as transaction advisory services. We serve clients across a broad range of industries through various stages of the business life cycle.
I am most proud of our team and their belief in our mission and our vision. Everyone on the team left great jobs to join a firm in start-up mode, which most consider a risky move. Our rates for our quality and experience set us apart. If anyone from the HMBL team were at a larger firm, we’d be billed out at the double the cost. Because we don’t have significant overhead, corporate debt, and/or a large group of partners all needing a share of the revenue, we can offer the same quality of work as larger firms, but at a fraction of the cost.
Financial Accounting & Advisory – Technical accounting issues, SEC financial reporting, business combinations, forensic accounting, litigation support, purchase price accounting, lease accounting, and revenue recognition.
Accounting & Finance Operations – Comprehensive team from bookkeeping to the CFO. Monthly financial close and reporting. Financial planning and analysis. Audit and tax preparation. Internal controls. Process improvement.
Transaction Advisory Services – M&A due diligence to identify risks and opportunities, including quality of earnings, working capital analysis, opening balance sheet, and financial reporting.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is visiting my grandparents in Perry, Oklahoma. Perry was a tiny town, everyone knew everyone, and the rules were very relaxed. We were free to explore the area and had a wide range of ways to do it. We had two riding lawnmowers, a dirt bike, a go-cart, and an old slug bug. We shot BB guns, a potato gun and homemade sling shots. My grandpa would pull us around town in a tractor and a trailer he built. We would end the day with a homemade dinner and coke float.
