Meet Marcus Cazares of The Marchives in Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Cazares.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marcus. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I’ve always been really observant. I feel like that’s where my interest in photography gradually came about. I would always take pictures of things that I thought looked cool on my phone. I didn’t pick up a professional camera until the beginning of 2018 (even then, I didn’t buy my own camera until that summer since photography equipment is so expensive). Once I got my hands on a camera, I began to try and learn everything about the craft. I started off doing shoots with friends. I’ve studied different things all the way from lighting techniques to colors and the different emotions they can evoke.

Sometimes I even practice posing on my own so I can better help my muse get an idea of what we’re going for. I also got into styling along the way and do it from time to time as well. That being said, I have gotten to where I’m currently at by a solid work ethic and creating consistently on my own time. I also got where I am today by the continuous support from my closest friends when I was first starting out. I’m forever grateful for anyone that has let me borrow equipment when I didn’t have my own, assisted me on crazy shoot days, and basically saw the vision and potential when others might not have.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been far from smooth (lol). I would say the main struggle that I’ve had is trying to establish myself as an artist/brand in a creative field that is predominantly white. Lack of support at times is definitely something else that has been discouraging at times, especially when it comes from people who are closer to you. Some people don’t see the arts as important because “it doesn’t make money” or “it’s, not a real job”. Money has also been an issue as well. Having to postpone things due to lack of funds sucks sometimes but the delayed gratification is always worth it. Even today, there are still some concepts I haven’t done or that I’m holding off on because I know that in order to execute it exactly the way I want to I need to invest in the project properly.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a photographer. I specialize in portraits. I call it “The Marchives” because I wanted something that would stick and was also affiliated with my name, as it is a play on my first name and the word archives. I would have to say that people recognize me by my style of photos. I am most proud of being able to bring the ideas that I have in my head to life. I feel that I’m great at this because I make everything personal. Anyone that has worked with me knows that I’m really detailed when it comes to my craft, and that is because my art is an extension of who I am. Everything has a purpose. I also put an emphasis on relationships. I like to get to know who I’m working with (if we’re not already friends) because when you do, the energy is amazing when it’s time to create. The feeling that you get when you come together with like-minded creatives that can help you execute an idea flawlessly is unmatched. I am so thankful for all the long-lasting relationships I’ve made throughout this year and a half. Lastly, I would say that what sets me apart from others can be felt. My eye is my own and I enjoy being able to let everyone get an idea of how I see the world.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would probably be any time that have been spent with my siblings. Although we get on each other’s nerves a lot I love them so much.
