Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Cervantes.
Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About 7 years ago, I was working for an OB/GYN office. My mom feel and broke her hip, and took a turn for the worse. I took some time off to take care of her, and as a hobby I started painting furniture. I would randomly find good pieces next to a dumpster or on the curb for trash pick-up. I would take them home, clean them up and paint them. It became therapy for me. To be honest, it was also the thrill of the hunt when I found stuff!! After a little over a year, my mom passed away. It took me a few months to get back in the swing of things. By now, I had been doing very well selling the items I found on craigslist. I decided to set up at a local flea market, and ended up being there for over 2 years. My business kept growing, so I opened my first brick and mortar store. It was very humble, nothing fancy, but it was mine. After a little over a year there, I was blessed with an even bigger space, and I have been here for almost 4 years now. I give God all the glory for how I got here. I can’t thank Him enough.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with most small businesses, there is feast and famine. When we are in the famine, we get creative with designing new and different pieces to attract some business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dumpster Diva Designs – what should we know?
We custom build and repurpose furniture! It is a family owned company with my husband, my son and myself. We also offer new furniture, as well as customize your furniture. My daughter also makes hand written signs and candles that we sell here.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband Javier and my son James, have been my right hand. Without their support and help I would not be able to offer as much as I do. My 2 daughters, Sofia and Deja, and my family have always been my biggest cheerleaders. Above all God is the reason for my success.
