Meet Melissa Métoyer of My Resurrection Fern in Central Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Métoyer.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to founding My Resurrection Fern and its holistic person-centered counseling, coaching and herbal services have been seven generations in the making, steeped in the wisdom of healing women I am proud to call my ancestors. At the young age of twelve years old I began my own research into my family’s enduring legacy and through the years have had the honor and privilege to build upon the community that my family established in the U.S. in the 1800s. I conducted extensive research into official documents as well as discovered personal family ledgers that my immediate family members have protected and preserved. These ledgers, documents, letters, bible, written in both French and English contain such valuable healing treasures that I’m grateful to be able to share with the world.

My family’s narrative of faith and family has molded my perspective of what it means to take care of our community and inspired me to pursue a degree in Psychology to understand the mind and how it affects our behavior. I attended the Xavier University of Louisiana and obtained a B.S. in Psychology Pre-Medicine with a minor in Chemistry. I’ve always loved chemistry since childhood although at that time I didn’t realize how big of an impact that would have in my chosen career field, I just followed my intuition.

After undergrad, I moved to Dallas to begin my clinical career and there received my Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from UT Southwestern Medical Center. My Resurrection Fern, named for the resilient plant growing among Louisiana’s stately oaks that restores itself to verdancy when rain eases its thirst, was born from these experiences and my intentions to create a sacred space where I could integrate my 18 years of professional experience in the private and public health sectors, academic studies and continue my ancestors’ legacy of lovingly caring for others while gracefully assisting them to realize their powerful potential of living a joy-filled life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe the path of every journey contains its set of detours from how we envision specific details of our life stages to look. When rough patches arise on my road I trust the roadblock is there for a valuable reason and although the particular circumstances might not look like what I’ve envisioned. I always listen and obey my inner calling that directs my steps to continue the journey for there is beauty in each step even if the step contains what I’m perceiving as pain.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My Resurrection Fern works with clients of all ages to help them achieve their goals of wellness by addressing all facets of health. Services offered at My Resurrection Fern vary according to each individual’s needs. We offer life coaching/counsel, parent/family coaching, individual behavior programs, as well as herbal allies and remedy services. My mission is to elevate the collective experience of wellness.

I have passion for fostering a sacred space where others feel heard, seen and validated in their quest for a joy-filled life. Today, as a counselor and a coach, I am able to employ a wide range of modalities that has given rise to my own unique style and allowed me to best serve the myriad needs of my clients.

A few of the many things I’m proud of is the herbal knowledge, faith and entrepreneurial spirit my family’s iconic matriarch, Marie Thérèse dite Coincoin, ensured to pass down through the generations. Especially, the herbal knowledge of how nature has provided us with special allies to support every step of our journey. I’m thrilled to be able to offer precious blends based on my study of plants and the inherited hand-written sacred doctrine ledgers where the healers in my family transcribed their restorative recipes.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Many shining stars have contributed to my personal and business success. I have been very fortunate to have supportive parents and family members who believe in me, actively listen to me and show up for me in any weather. No matter what goal I set they encourage my ability to achieve it. I am grateful for the brilliant lights that have been placed on my path from mentors when I first started my career at Children’s Medical Center that continue to guide and advocate for me, to clients that have given me the tremendously wonderful gift to align with them at their most vulnerable stages of life to help bring joy to their path along with friends that bolster me in my mission to elevate the collective experience of wellness. Last, but certainly not least my amazingly kind, smart and beautiful daughter for motivating me each and every day to never quit on the dream that has been placed in my heart.
