Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Thornton.
Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
While I was a Senior in High School and exploring the idea of what my major would be in college, I was in between Music Management and Radio, Television, and Film. My senior thesis project ended up being a music video for a song my classmate wrote and composed herself. From that moment, I knew that being a video producer was possible. I graduated from Townview Magnet Center in Dallas, Texas, then went on to study Recording Industry at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Due to financial hardships, I had to transfer to Cedar Valley College, where I earned my Associate’s degree, and after much reflection, I came to the realization that I could still achieve my dreams. I was accepted and earned my Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Also, during this time, I constantly volunteered at St. Philip’s School and Community Center by being a mentor and positive role model for the students I encountered while there. “If it is to be, its up to me,” a motto I live by daily to remind me that anything is possible and that if I can think it, I can achieve it. Giving back to the community that has given so much to me is an important piece of me.
Has it been a smooth road?
When taking risks, new adventures always have obstacles to overcome. I remember having dreams and reoccurring thoughts about starting my own business and I was so nervous about making it a reality. I went to my best friend and did a whole presentation on what I wanted, how I wanted it, and the steps needed to get there. I just knew she would tell me that I was being unrealistic and that it was impossible to do, but instead, she excitingly responded, “Let’s do it!” Ever since that initial meeting, we have been on the move. Some of the struggles we have endured include competition with close peers, financial struggles, social media influence, and having reliable, consistent, and driven individuals on the team. We take every day as a learning lesson and keep moving forward.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Harmony Jones Productions focuses on making “dreams a reality.” Our motto is “Passion, Prayer, and Purpose.” Our mission is to expose minorities, specifically children and youth, to opportunities within the entertainment industry and the arts. We produce commercials, promotional videos, and short films that reflect our community in a positive view. We are most proud of the connection we are making with people in our communities and motivating the youth to become more than what they see in front of them. Our founder was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and we film in local areas around the DFW metroplex, which gives our films and events a unique and personal connection.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that Dallas has great potential for a business like ours because it has such diverse communities and a plethora of creatives. I know that when people think about the film industry, they automatically recommend that creatives to go to Hollywood, CA or Atlanta, GA. I have thought about moving to one of those cities, but then I think about the potential to bring those opportunities here. If someone was just starting out, I would recommend them starting in their hometown, where they already have support and resources. My close family and friends have been so supportive when it comes to sharing content, participating in events, and just overall being encouraging. Some things our city can do to improve is show more support to local creatives and sharing their experiences and progress, similar to how Voyage Dallas Magazine is doing.
