Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Ziemer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Texas when I was 16 years old and fell in love with music. I began going to a lot of concerts and soon realized if I interviewed bands and wrote CD reviews I could get into shows for free. From there, I began putting on my own shows, while still in high school, and now 14 years later, my company Third String Productions is doing over 300 events a year!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I dropped out of college, and I didn’t really have any mentors, so everything was trial and error for me. Being a concert promoter is a gamble, so I had to learn to be okay with losing money sometimes and also had to make sure I had the money to lose. The concert business is very up and down, but overall it’s been a great 14 years!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m the founder of Third String Productions and most known for our festival So What?!
Music Fest (formerly known as South By So What?!) I am personally responsible for a lot of the booking and marketing as well as day to day operations and planning.
I’m most proud of the fact that our festival has survived over ten years! What sets both our shows and our festivals apart is our genuine love and attention to marketing and promoting the bands we work with.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to wake up every day doing what I love. It’s that simple to me. If I wake up and I still love my job, I consider myself successful regardless of any amount of money.
