Meet Misty Lam of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Lam.

Hi Misty, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Misty Lam and I am a DJ / aspiring producer. I have been into EDM music for almost 4 years now and it all started when I went on a limb and bought my first DJ board.
I had no idea what I was doing but I knew I wanted to learn. After several YouTube videos and practicing in my room, I started to become somewhat good at mixing songs together.
Anyone can honestly be a DJ… to be a great DJ is to have unique music taste and be able to control a crowd really well with what you’re playing. I knew my music taste was super special and I had to show the world what music they needed to hear.
After a year of playing music to my roommates and close friends in college, I finally was able to overcome my stage freight and play shows live. Since then, it’s been a crazy journey. From playing at local bars to opening for artists like Alison Wonderland and Getter, they are artists I look up to whose music that made me fall in love with EDM.
Today, I have opened for many amazing artist that are known in the EDM scene. Playing support shows are always a blast and so inspiring. I wouldn’t be where or who I am today without the support of my partner, my friends, other DJs and artists, my mentor, and my family. They inspire me every single day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me, DJing and producing has definitely been a bumpy ride. DJing and producing music takes time, energy, and it cost money. It helps to have supportive people around you, people to push you to be better and people who you want to be like. I think some of my main struggles are with learning. For producing music it has definitely been a challenge, but that’s because I know I am in the stages of progressing. Doing this somewhat alone requires a lot of patience, effort, and compassion for music.
After the first year of learning how to produce music, there has been genuine times where I’ve wanted to give up. However, I love the process of it all and at times it can be super rewarding. Listening back to a track you made and thinking “wow I can’t believe I made this” is such a reward. Curating a set and listening to the crowd react to you is where the hard work pays off. The reward from all of the preparation and time that goes into building set lists and working on tracks makes me more confident in myself as an artist/individual. I know it’s a game of patience and consistency.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I play EDM and I’m starting to produce my own music now too. I specialize in different EDM genres and I’m known for making having a unique style in the type of music I play. People know me to play hard hitting house music and feel good bass music.
My friends know me as “MISS T”… originally it started as “MXT” to then “MIXTI” to now the infamous “MISS T” which is ironically my name Misty and which the “T” stands for my government “Trinh.”
I am most proud of how far I’ve come since I’ve started my journey. Five years ago if I told my younger self that I would be a DJ/Producer who will play alongside talented artists at huge venues, I would not believe it. I’m also proud of the community, events, and people I’ve met along the way. It’s so inspiring to see everyone’s journeys and experiences.
What sets me apart from others is my unique experience, tasteful sounds, and knowledge in the community.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
For me my favorite childhood memory is my aunt showing me Katy Perry’s Hot N Cold song and thinking it was the best track I’ve ever heard. That is the first song I loved and to this day it’s still a certified banger. I’ll never forget how the song made me dance and feel so alive. I think my aunt has some of the best music taste in my family. She has shown me a bunch of songs I love today and coincidentally, she now also loves EDM music.
Growing up, I’ve always loved playing music and listening to it. It’s the first thing I put on when I get in my car and sometimes the last thing I hear when I go to bed.
