Meet Nathan Scott of Nathan Scott Photography and Fallen Pearls in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Scott.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a professional Ballet and modern dancer working here in the Dallas area. I started to study body lines and shapes and how angles could then be morphed into new shapes. After dancing here and partnering Prima Ballerinas from some of the top ballet companies in the US, including New York City Ballet and Miami Ballet, I ventured into the world of Ballroom dance. During this time I trained with some of the top coaches in the country and started studying how 2 bodies would then intertwine to form new shapes. I continued my training dancing with Cirque du Soleil and performing in their aerial silks. During this time I injured my spine. I had herniated disk and lost all range of motion greater than 20% in my left leg. I was rushed into emergency spinal surgery when my spinal sacks started bursting inside me. After my surgery I finally decided to pursue a college education, where I enrolled at The University of North Texas. I majored in dance with a special interest in dance and technology. I had a professor named Mary Lynn Babcock who taught a dance and tech class and a laban studies class. During this time I picked up a camera for the first time since high school yearbook. I started working with how the virtual body worked with the living body. I started photographing friends with Elizabeth Jordan being a great resource and started teaching me about photography. Without her or Mary Lynn I would not have picked up a camera. From there I started studying Laban studies with Mary Lynn and discovered an ideal called the laban icosahedron. This is the basis for all of my photography and clothing design work.

My first photoshoot was for a major international purse designer. I was there as an assistant. When the photographer no showed on her, she looked at me and said you are up. Don’t fuck up. And she left the shoot. This was my first professional shoot. I shot the ad campaign in within weeks it was featured in Divulge magazine as well as internationally for her brand. From there I started to focus on male fitness and fashion photography, which has gotten me on the pages of DNA Magazine, Apollo, GQ’s blogs and Vanity and VanityHype. I am still chasing that coveted Vogue publication.

I started in fashion design after I shot an ad campaign for a Swedish designer and he hated the work, citing I didn’t know what it was like to shoot something I created with my own hands. Challenge accepted. I began to sketch some designs and wanted to begin creating. I was invited to New York Fashion Week for Walk Fashion Show. People who have become great friends and I am always honored to work with them. After my New York debut I was trending on social media and fashion blogs for doing the unthinkable. I walked a size 22 curvaceous bombshell down the runway. And I did not stop there. I walked several plus size models and a transgender woman down a New York Fashion Week Runway. This got me in GQ, VanityHype and DNA. Fallen Pearls was officially born.

Since that time, I have shown my clothing line in New York Fashion week for the past 5 years. As well as have open invitations to Paris, Tokyo and Milan fashion week. I continue to push my photography further, even having one of my wedding photos published in Vanity and being names the Dallas Voices Photographer of the year in 2016 and 2018.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say it was. With my photography company it has been pretty easy. I was lucky that my work was noticed and I had developed a distinct style.

Fallen Pearls on the other hand was not so easy. I originally started the company with 2 other girls. I had a falling out with 1 of my partners and she decided to walk away. The other one decided to pursue school full time. I was left with a clothing line, 2 months to NYFW and no idea how to really sew. I had to teach myself everything I knew. I had 2 wonderful mentors. 1 having moved across the country and the 2nd having a falling out that we are no longer on speaking terms.

Both companies have put a strain on my personal relationship with my partner of 4 years. But somehow we are able to work through it all.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

I specialize in Men’s fashion and fitness. I am also known for my wedding photography, even having Vanity publish one of the photos in an article of theirs. What I take pride in my photography company is that we are creative and we will do everything we can to add a touch of fashion to your head shots, wedding and family photos.

Fallen Pearls
I specialize in Women’s plus size dresses and making you feel pretty. Our motto is Diamonds May Be a Girl’s Best Friend. But Honey, the Way You Feel in Pearls. Now That’s Forever. We also like to make men and women’s clothes in the fall that are elegant and inspired by old world romance. And our spring is all about color and making you feel like the diva you truly are.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Dallas is a fantastic training ground. For photography you have so many amazing models and agencies in this area. For fashion it is a bit harder. I feel that fashion in Dallas is dead.

This is our Mantra going forward for Fallen Pearls Dallas Fashion is dead reduced to a caricature world of denim, rhinestones and big hair.

Your designers have abandoned you. Placing you in tight restrictive niches making you live in a monochrome black and white world. Rather than in bright living color break free from all those tight little labels. Including gender, androgyny, ethnicity & sexuality choking and limiting your wardrobe. Join us in a real world with no boundaries, bins or boxes. Now is the Time to Live Free We are the Future Where Will You be?

I think starting in fashion here is great to begin. But in order to succeed you will have to leave.
