Hi Olivia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
E Closet started back when I was in college as a very busy interior design major. I had no time for a job but I was spending money like I had a six figure one! From three date parties a week, game days, birthday brunches, and so much more, I was buying an outfit for every occasion. The catch is I would never wear these outfits again. They would sit in my closet and I wouldn’t be caught wearing again, (especially if I posted it on instagram), as any girl would say!
I didn’t reinvent the wheel with this one, but I made a closet account on Instagram, and started to rent out my nicer game day outfits, cocktail dresses, and unique pieces for those special occasions. I called the account @inapinchrentals, cute right!? It blew up out of nowhere. I started shipped to every state, college, occasion, you name it. It was going great as I was making a true salary, meeting girls from all over, getting messages like, “You made my birthday so special.” or “I got so many compliments.” My favorite memory was when I was on bourbon street in New Orleans and I got stopped two times from girls renting my outfits. That truly was not only a pinch me moment, but a moment where I knew this needed to be taken to the next level.
Everything was going great. Until I started to get SO busy to where I couldn’t keep up with my excel sheet where I tracked everything on, damage control, tracking where all my rents were, and the marketing tools that came alone with it. This is when Brandon, my co founder and CEO messaged me on Instagram! A mutual connected us because they knew what he was building BTS of his corporate six figure job, and what I was running through an instagram. The app was born and scaled! The rest is history, and history is in the making with us!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. We have been told no by investors, closet accounts, businesses, marketing agencies, and so much more along the way. Brandon, who began to raise long before I came along, has been told no by investors over 1,000 times. This past winter, we finally got investor money, which allowed us to pay a salary, for some marketing tools, resources for events and pop ups, and influencer marketing, which is money to pay for influencers to post for us! I would say that has been a struggle as it’s definitely defeating, but also motivating!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a clothing peer to peer rental platform, where you can rent clothes from girls whether that be locally or 15 hours away! We also provide options to purchase clothes from others as well as storefronts, boutiques, online businesses, etc. The aspect of E Closet that sets us apart from the rest is the option to purchase from storefronts instead of just users on the platform and our newest feature on Closet Talk, our in-app group chat, where you can earn 15% of a rental that gets booked if you suggested and linked it! Lastly, unlike the rest, we started at colleges and bled into a city model.
I am most proud of the quality of our clothes as well as our marketing. We want the users to be brand obsessed, and feel like they can relate to every struggle, thought, rent, and lifestyle that we have in some way! I want readers to know this is the easiest way to make money from assets you have sitting in your closet, to meet girls in your city and beyond, and to save money while looking your best at events. How do you think about happiness?
Making girls feel confident and empowered in their clothes. I know how a good outfit makes me feel, and everyone should be able to feel that way no matter their situation!
