Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Lieck Bryce.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My Pilates story was truly by incredible luck. Pilates found me! I was in my early 20’s and was working the front desk of a Pilates studio in Austin, TX. Shortly after starting at the desk, one of the senior instructors offered to start training me, I said of course! I was in love! The studio I was at just happened to be a sister studio for famed Pilates instructor, Colleen Glenn’s program, funny enough here in Dallas, little did I know this was where I would land. I knew nothing about the different kinds of Pilates. In the late 90’s there wasn’t really anything other than what we referred to as authentic, classical, real, or traditional… It was just Pilates and it was pure! I have been teaching now for about 17 years, and have never been bored, never has it not been a workout, and it is always good to my body! The lives I’ve watched change, over and over, is a testament to Pilates. In the last 17 years, I have opened 3 studios from ground zero, and sold two. I became a teacher of teachers in 2009 for Power Pilates NYC, and then 6 years later resigned and was asked to come on board with Alycea Ungaro and become a leader in her program, Real Pilates. It has been a beautiful ride so far. I can’t wait to see what the next 17 years bring!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not a chance! I look back at my first 5 years of teaching as I do my first studio, amateur. This work is so profound and takes years to fully understand, and then some. I had 2 failed partnerships, and had plenty of doors close that I was devastated by at the time. The good news though, when one door closed, another opened. Through perseverance it has made me a stronger teacher, business owner, and so much more! I am grateful for even the hardest lessons.
Please tell us about Pilates Methodology.
I am most proud of my team at Pilates Methodology. They are all so damn good! All of my teachers and admin team care deeply about the Pilates method and our students. If you are going to spend mass amounts of time anywhere, it’s best if you can spend it with people you enjoy, have common interests and share the passion for the work. Our specialty is keeping the authentic method alive, catering to each student’s individual needs and goals, while have a great time and delivering a killer workout!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This is a funny question, only because I have started over, three times! Each studio that I have built, conceptualized and brought to life has been a true labor of love! Each studio had its own unique look and feel but the method has not changed! I was incredible fortunate to be able to have 2 successful studios previously that allowed me to fine tune my business practices, management, and operations. Methodology is the outcome of fine tuning what I wanted my studio ultimately to look like, inside and out. Methodology has gone far beyond my highest hopes. Each studio led to the next, and with each one I had to examine my previous choices, do better where I had fallen short, and ask myself “what do I want it to look like.”
