Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Huerta.
Rafael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a 6th-grade math teacher, so this started as a side hustle two years ago to try to make a little extra money. I’ve always loved thrifting and finding unique pieces of clothing. When I sold my first piece online and saw the potential profits, I was in! I started an Instagram and sold mostly on eBay. One day, my wife (Julieta) and I were driving on Magnolia Ave to look for a place to eat. We parked right next to the building Historic 1208. I think I made the comment of “wouldn’t it be cool to have a little store here?”. A week later, we signed a lease agreement. Now we have a little brick and mortar location right on Magnolia Ave in Fort Worth, Texas. I never imagined selling vintage clothing would be this much fun. It is truly a blessing, and we are so thankful to everyone that shows us love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The only struggles I have had is not finding enough vintage clothes. I am going to continue to keep this side hustle as positive and as fun as possible. My day job is stressful enough.
817 Vintage Hype – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We sell vintage clothing curated towards the ’90s and ’80s street fashion. We are most proud of being the first Fort Worth location that offers vintage clothing in such an awesome location like Magnolia Ave. What sets us apart from others is that this business is run by me (Rafael) and my family. I also post a lot of me and my family on my Instagram because I believe that people buy from people they know and like. Anyone can post a cool t-shirt, but if you post yourself and people can see you’re genuine and positive, they will support you.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is defined by making a positive impact on other people’s lives. If I sell someone a t-shirt that makes them smile and brings them happiness, that is success.
